Venom's origin story:
Eddie Brock was a reporter for the Daily Globe, the Daily Bugle's main competitor. When a criminal known only as the "Sin-Eater" appeared, Brock found a man who claimed to be the villain and had the interview published. Brock quickly became known as the man who caught the Sin-Eater... until Spider-Man caught the real one, and Eddie Brock became the laughingstock of the Daily Globe. He then went to church and prayed to God that his soul might see peace. As he was going to commit suicide, however, something overcame him.
That something was the alien symbiote which Spider-Man had found off-world during the Secret Wars. Spider-Man had found that, worn as a suit, it increased his powers, but at the cost of possessing him. Spider-Man fought, it and it retired to the same church to which Eddie Brock would one day come.
So was born Venom. The two parts of it share a common goal: to take revenge against Spider-Man.
