Description
Finally here. This thing is truly monstrous, I'll have to split it in two some other time. Maybe even in four. I've just been informed by the 'which file' upload section that I cant submit anything larger than 18000x10800...my file was 2000x 40000. So if it's lost so much quality that its unreadable let me know and I'll do something about it.Anyway, apologies to those who have been waiting, I know there's at least one or two out there. It still needs work but you can always just send me a note or comment here to get any information you need
To anyone who's just stumbled upon this little tutorial or the Animation-Group then you have before you the first of (hopefully) a larger set encompassing the many aspects of animation.
Here are the links that were referenced in the tutorial

Woah. DD, cool.
Thanks to my good friend for the suggestion, go check her out, NOW.

800px wide? I'm not sure that will make much difference I'm afraid, the original was 2,000 x 40,000 and deviantart have a limit of 18,000 x 10,800 which cut it to a quarter of its original quality
I could email you a higher quality version if you'd like, or host a better quality online somewhere for those who need it.

naw I was joking, but I am going to show this to my animation teacher since my class is still working on ball bounces, and some people just don't get it in my class so I was thinking this would help.[well now/before i was totally going to use this in my notes]

Thank you, if you'd like to see some of my animation just follow the link in my signature to my vimeo page. The link should bring you to my showreel, but there's two full films there too. Plus, a good example of how the principles above can be applied to a human. That example is called the fat man box jump or something similar.

yeha animation is not my strong point i can do it okay but it take me too long i need to get more into it i do 3d animation all the same things apply just i am better at modeling and everything else i just enjoy animation but its not my strength at this stage. and i want to work a bit in the industry befor i deside what i want to do. cos i might even get into game dev or film or who know when i end up. but yeah nice tut iv got the survival kit so i know how to animate just need to improve.
[link] the animation is not too great all the way through i did eveything in this project.
animation is the altimate art.

Yeah, I'd advise to get back to basics with hand drawn animation to get the principles into your bloodstream before you go on to try animating in 3D. That is if animation is what you want to do. Your modelling work was impressive but the animation does need a bit of work, which are you more interested in? the modelling or the animation?
I think that link is broken by the way.

well modeling i fine easier.. and animation i dont have much issue with other then it take me way longer. for example i only really started blocking out those walk cycles and quickly just smoothed them out so i never did any tweaking on graphs and arches also i never worked on the posing as much as i should have. i was short of time and had to finish up even my renders are not quite what i wanted but they got the job done. i started with traditional animation both 2d and stop mo but its not my strongest though its more interesting now that i have done with college im going to be pushin animation so its atleast an option whe it comes to finding a job for now i will take what i can get even rigging thought its a frustration i can rig. is the link not working ???
try
[link]
and thanks i was pretty pleased with it over all as it was alll my work and done all by me no half and half so that was pain but i did learn i think or two wanted to try out more dynamics but had no time that little bit of cloth at the start was all and the text but chances are i will be a modeler cos i know how and i do enjoy it though i find it gets dry
for now i will model and rig characters and enter 11 second club atleast enter WIP's for feedback to improve good practice i find.

I'm impressed to see the "on paper" variation of animation here... in these digital times I wouldn't have expected that, especially since I consider it to be a lot harder than the digital version.
several years ago I had a non-digital animation planned and never got past the first few sheets/frames, because of all the time it took... so whoever actually manages a good animation this way has my admiration.
... though that little voice in the back of my mind keeps telling me that a little flip-book animation couldn't be too hard.

Go-Crag-Go In reply to janey-in-a-bottle [2010-12-07 16:44:58 +0000 UTC]
Yeah animating on paper does take a bit of getting used to. It's fairly involved and you need a fairly specialised set-up but all the principles are the same regardless of medium. Animation students tend to be thought on paper first because its a much better way to start learning as the life drawing that you learn translates better when you work on paper rather than digitally.
I'd say if you're interested in working traditionally on paper or just interested in giving it a try then start small. You can always clean up the work digitally to get a smooth finish or a desired digital look that you can place on top of your traditional drawings.
Flipbooks are always a great way to spend a few hours too.

"Its all about the timing and the spacing.", "Animation IS acting."
Yeah, having that drilled into me for the last three years.
The bouncing ball really is horrible isn't it?
But it's also a hugely useful tool.

JMFenner91 In reply to Go-Crag-Go [2010-12-07 19:24:06 +0000 UTC]
It is indeed useful but it was still kind of a drag since it's so simple. A lot of people in my class new to animation went a bit overboard without knowing what they were doing so they added like faces and tails and thing and then it just ended up not making sense because they didn't know really how to make the ball rotate or anything. I'm just starting my second year of animation school and it's a lot of fun, finally getting to some really awesome animation stuff and techniques. I'll admit though it took me awhile at first to get used to using x-sheets and converting feet to seconds but after working with them for some time it just kind of came naturally.

Go-Crag-Go In reply to JMFenner91 [2010-12-08 09:44:40 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the x-sheets and feet to seconds can be a bit of a pain, I still haven't learned the conversion of by heart yet.
We got that here too, people got carried away by the gimmicks of having the ball explode or transform etc. which completely misses the point of the exercise which is to learn the basic principles...oh we silly students will never learn.

I had to, the test we had to today required we had it memorized.
We looked back today at the first ball animations in class and ugh so many people didn't use squash and stretch! What was wrong with them!? Haha I couldn't live without it now.
