Description
(I had an excellent description writen out then I managed to refresh the page and I lost it. Stupid Jessie)---Please Full View. Comments are much appreciated as are favs
For the past week or so in my Art History of the 20th Cent, class, I've been oh-so-studiously doodling (as always) and drawing maps of random lands in my notes instead of paying attention. As I was thoroughly ignoring the professor, the thought occured to me that it would be much better to draw one of these maps in Photoshop. So, today, instead of working on my homework, I did this.
It is of no place that really exists (as far as I know); I made it up entirely on the spot. I tried to make the geographical features as realistic as possible. If you can't tell, it is heavily inspired by the work of Tolkien and his maps of Middle Earth. The races that have cities on here are inspired mostly by Tolkien and Mercedes Lackey. It was drawn entirely in Photoshop taking me about 4-5 hours while trying different techniques and methods.
If, for some reason, you are inspired to write a story, novel, or poem, or create some lovely work of art based on this map, be my guest. Please, though, send me the results so I can oogle. Also, if you can think of any names for all these cities and geographical features I have slapped on here, please comment and suggest them. My names tend to be a bit too excentric to work well as Geographical names.

since its based on Tolkien, try this site out:

its not for cities per se, but they would at least have names with a meaningxD
srry but putting it in hyperlink doesn't seem to work

Thanks for the link!
I don't think I'll ever put in roads or even city names on this; I think in my mind it's a map of a land that's been long abandoned. But then again that might be because this project is long abandoned

Yup, I used photoshop with a ton of layers and lots of textures. It really wasn't that hard to make if you want to do your own

i'm probably a bit (a lot) late in viewing this but stumbled across it recently. very cool but one thing: is it just me or are there no roads in the map despite the legend specifying what road markings look like? oh and by the way, tolkien is a genius!

Could you please, please note me with how you made this? I'm making maps for my latest novel project, and I have no idea where to start in making them look pretty like this in Photoshop.

Wow, really beautiful. I envy your skills, if only the map I drew for my world looked as good as this...I don't think I put enough towns in places, and I didn't really make all that many plains and or mountains. Very wonderful work, beautiful.

GoaliGrlTilDeath In reply to MikoUnisto [2006-11-23 00:08:25 +0000 UTC]
thanks The biggest help with maps is having a basic understanding of geological features that way your plains/mountains/etc make sense being where you stuck them
And after that, just think of where might be a logical and tactical place for a city and slap one on

I did that...But that's my problem, I have some cities, but not enough...But I don't want too many. My map is...Well, large, but not large enough for me to put a lot of detail into. I tried to use AutoREALM, but it won't work for me.

I had someone send me autorealm but I didn't get the hang of how to make it work. Besides, I think I prefer a more hands on drawing type approach personally. It's what I'm used to.

You did a great job using AutoREALM: it can be a tricky program.

I actually used Photoshop for this one. Is there a program to make maps like this?

AutoREALM is an Open Source program that lets you make all kind of maps -> [link]
It is not so easy at first, but once you learn how to use it it's just perfect.

GoaliGrlTilDeath In reply to mLArgLE [2005-02-01 07:03:38 +0000 UTC]
I think I might. I was thinking while I was putting in the cities that it was a pretty small chunk of land. So, yes, eventually I plan on making the rest of the planet, but I have real homework that needs to get done first
