Description Wagga Wagga Horse Trials One Day Event (ODE), run by the Riverina Equestrian Association.
The water jump in the cross country round. Rider and horse name withheld.

The day before the event was beautiful, but the actual day of the event the weather was cold, cloudy, drizzle. In other words, terrible for photographers! Had to crank the ISO up, aperture wide open and fairly slow shutter speed - not ideal for fast moving action!

This is awesome! I'm curious, do you go and take photos of the riders because you want to, or does the show hire you? And afterwards, do you offer your photos to the riders or just use them for promotion purposes?

Sometimes I am one of (or the only) official photographers for the event and I sell photos through my website. Β Sometimes I am taking photos for friends who are competing. Β Other times just because I love equestrian sports! Β There are times when I supply digital files of all (good) images from an event to the organisers for promotional purposes or reports/results in club magazines/newsletters.

Still an absolutely fantastic shot Isaac.
So want your lens. Sigh. (that website has them quite cheap now too, rah!)
Almost wish I could have gone to this, alas friend's weddings come first!

Thanks Whitney.
I've got plenty more to learn and my skills certainly need some improvement. But I do believe that my skills have improved greatly since first using a SLR camera. Slowly getting better at making sure the subject is centred for the AI servo to work correctly. Also gradually getting better at predicting where the subject will be and thus where in the frame in the next shot. For example, this was not cropped at all. As they say, practice makes perfect, as does getting to know your camera/lens. If I had of remembered to remove the CPL filter I might have been able to bump up the shutter speed a notch.

As for lenses, I can highly recommend going for the IS version for hand-held shots. But if you mostly use a tripod, then go for one with a tripod ring.

Very tempted to try and get a business loan and upgrade my gear to go pro. But too much risk at the moment.

Yeah, commitments like that are pretty important. The plus was that it would have been heaps warmer in Sydney. Barely got above 5 degrees most of the day!

Oh the weather was pretty much the same in Sydney, moments of sunlight happened at the right time though (no dresses got wet thank god), but it was cold all day.

You could go Pro. I could see you doing that quite happily. You just need the confidence and the motivation to go ahead and do it.
The only thing with going Pro is that the real money is with Weddings, but if you were willing to travel to every horse event across the Eastern side of Australia, and charge what your photos are worth (this one, for example, "Event Photography" who did the Wagga ODE a couple of years ago, would charge $60 for an A4 print. No digital copy, nothing else but the print), you could do that too, I'd wager.

I'd so love to go Pro. I feel like I never get time to play with my camera any more, and with only one lens to play with (seriously it's not even worth trying with my kits lenses any more) I lose motivation. One day I'll go buy more and be all motivated again, but now that I'm saving saving saving, no more erratic spending. Sigh.

Mane Event also do event photography including horse shows. I should check out how much the pro's sell prints for. I remember one ODE the photographers had a caravan set up with colour printer and all so you can buy the print at the event, rather than have to order it. But that wasn't a one person thing.

Check out some unusual, but brilliant wedding photos at =fusionx

The caravan setup you're talking about is the one who charged (at least) $60 for the A4 print.
Yeah, there are plenty of event photographers out there, might be worth asking them if you can tag along for experience/a job?
