Description
Totally not supposed to be Red Bull knockoffs----
I wanted to explore the sort of technology that could exist in the FiM-verse (or at least, in my personal, sort-of-extended, somewhat-in-the-future FiM-verse). I'm not fond of steampunk and magicpunk (Dungeonpunk?) where mundane technology is held back 'because magic', which is why I wanted to minimize the magical elements in this pic and focus on the technology. The little touches of magic are all of the Magitek/Sufficiently Analyzed Magic kind (crystal tubes, magic transistors ... interspersed and mingled throughout but used in ways that would be familiar to us, and even powered by plain old electricity). So aesthetically everything looks dated and clunky, but functionally this mish-mash technology would be capable of doing things that aren't yet possible in our world

Okay this pick is awsome.
I was wondering if I could use the character in a fanfic though.

this reminds me of an interesting story about a Pegasus pony named "Ratchette" who has a knack for repairing enchanted items:

No offense intended, but I've always found it odd that people try to adapt the pony to human technology which doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I've yet to understand how a pony could use a screwdriver, frankly, given the need to rotate it (torque?) which is trickier than just holding onto one and practically designed for human usage. It would seem more sensible to try and imagine what a pony would have come up with minus any reference to Earth. The homage to vacuum tubes is interesting, but the vacuum part doesn't make a lot of sense with gems. I mean, why would the gems overheat? A mounting more like you'd find on a ring or necklace might look more sensible than two wires running to it.

Considering Vinyl's been shown with a full out DJ kit relating to her name it's within the realm of possibility. That & they apparently have Polaroids now. (Since Season 2?) So your "extended in the future" FiM could very well be possible.

Dude, i am trying to write a fanfic which is like really dark 1960s style equestria (assuming the show takes place in a time period equivalent to early 20th century) and my ideas about technology are very similar I also have stuff like crystal tube type things and magnetic tape drives in my alternative universe world and really basic mainframe computers. Also i love this pic

You can be forgiven to assume that Equestrian Technology is unmistakably similar to Modern Earth Technology.
They do have a Hydroelectric Dam, after all. Remember that from "Mare Do Well"?

Why do you think it's hydroelectric? Maybe be just a dam to hold water in place.

I really like your imagining of technology in Equestria. I feel like steampunk is a tad overused; your version fits better with Equestria, even if it is in the future of said world.

I love this!Β I think you totally nailed the theme you were going for.Β One gets the sense that this is "old technology", yet the subtle detail of crystals in vacuum tubes (who uses those anymore?!) suggests that there is something more going on.Β It almost has a sort of "mad science" feel to it, that strange blending of magic and science that gives way to the impossible, bending the known laws of the universe in ways we can't comprehend.
I'd be interested in seeing more of this. It makes sense that their technology might develop in a different way than our own.Β I want to see how that happens.

ACCEPTABLE.
Although I don't think the MLP world is in a medieval stasis, more schizotech than anything really. Steam power but no industrial revolution? Sure, why not?
I've never been quite the fan of the ramped-up techification you're giving the prevails-verse, as I am much more a fan of the vaguelyΒ renaissanceΒ era feel of your other works, but I agree in principle with your view that magic shouldn'tΒ necessarilyΒ hold back technological advancement as is assumed to be the case in 90% of fantasy these days, if anything, realistically, there is no reason knowledge and understanding of magic wouldn't be as ruthlessly exploited as the physical laws are in our world. All the more irritating as I am currently writing a fic north of hundreds of thousands of horsewords heavily based off of your works and I have to grind my teeth in trying to incorporate your newer stuff, waving it off as 'happening in the future'.
That said though, this is a really very nice piece and I absolutely adore the personalization of the pony's skin-suit she's got going on. Clearly she's been trouble shooting whatever the hell she's sitting in for quite a while, probably several all nighters. Althought wouldn't she get more done with different hoof-shoes? I get her left hoof is designed to help her with typing and such, meaning she can somehow control the shoe from the inside with her hoof (however the fuck Pony hooves work at manipulating things anyway), wouldn't she get more work done with a lighter hoof with the same typing appendages but with a hollow base to allow her hoof to type as well? Currently it looks like theΒ equivalentΒ of typing with bomb disposal gloves.

I guess she could type with her other claws as well, although in total that's still two less digits than what we have!
Originally I was thinking of ways to design a keyboard layout that would work with hooves, but in the end I like that it looks sort of unergonomic and clunky. If we considered Equestria Girls to be canon to the FiMverse, then for all we know Equestrians have just been copying things they've seen in other worlds, incorporating designs here and there without giving things too much thought. It would be a good explanation for how schizo their culture looks in general.
Whenever I feel like drawing medieval-ish stuff I go and draw scenes from Griffinia or more distant lands I think they're a lot more straightforward in theme: Medieval fantasy, with magic and guns and airships!

Oh don't get me wrong, I love the clunkiness of it, very lifelike ironically (just look at the shit we got up to in the 19th century, we had no idea what the fuck we were doing, it was hilarious)
I always adopted a more realistic approach to why their culture looks so schizotech to us: it isn't. Its a perfectly fine, logical and natural technological progression from their point of view. We have a nasty tendency to be biased to historical, social and technological progression and standards in fantasy worlds because of our own experiences, and FIM is no exception to this, but honestly, if you were a race of sapient magical ponies, your outlook on things and the route your technology takes to getting to the space age or whatever your culture looks upon as the pinnacle of civilization is going to be very different from some other species like humans. Frankly I am more interested in the mix between English, some vaguely Asian looking language I don't recognise and runes on the computer screen there, what's up with that?

GoatAnimeDatingSim In reply to Galloglasses [2015-03-29 10:17:03 +0000 UTC]
The rune-ish symbols are supposed to be a kind of magical language, since there's magical components/functions mixed throughout, and maybe they don't work properly if translated which is why they're left as is? The writing on the cans are probably just a different country's language
