My first stamp. Because sometimes art school doesn't happen.( and other times art class can't be tolerated. X3 )

Wow, this got a lot of faves/views! Now That I look back on it, it's an ugly stamp. xD I think there are prettier self taught stamps out there now. I should really update this thing. =O

What does it mean to be a "self taught" artist? Are you a self taught artist if you've watched tutorials? What about you taught yourself the basics of drawing, and people came along who gave you tips? Are you a "taught" artist only if you get a legit lesson from somebody? I feel like everybody has their own definition of this kind of artist...

I suppose a self-taught artist is one that takes initiative to learn on their own, whether it's through experimenting, doing tutorials and just going at it at your own pace.
Taught artists for me are the ones that go through actual classes and learn art through someone else.
I've done both :]

Nobody is self taught. You all learned from one place or another. It doesn't have to be an art school.

i go to a art club but all they really do is hand you some paper and pencils and tell you to just draw xD

I consider myself largely self-taught. I mostly just stare at myself in a mirror and contemplate what arms are shaped like or how pants wrinkle, etc. I'm also always improving, refining how I draw facial features, e.g. eyes, nose, etc. I used to draw eyes just as lines, and that was ok for pencil on paper, but I realized it would start to get weird if I ever transitioned to color, so I now draw them as long ovals (like in my profile pic). I also stare at other people to figure out how necks work, how male and female necks differ, etc. I haven't gotten any weird looks yet, thankfully.

Funny enough, i'm somewhat self taught (still learning).
I did art class all the way back in primary and all the way to part of grade 10. I never really learnt much from it and found my skills were actually degrading rather than improving. Art classes don't generally click well with me, it's too frustrating having a person yell at you what they want and how they want it done, my former art teacher in grade 9 told me to re-do my assignment simply because he didn't like it.
I think learning from books still qualifies as self taught in a way since they provide more "detail" than what an art teacher would. Nude classes how ever... i'm mixed on that.

I'm a self taught artist too :] i dont even usually use drawing books, but sometimes i use reference pictures, or online guides when there is something im having extreme trouble drawing.
I dont like art school/classes because most of the time you have to draw a specific thing >_< which takes away the main reason i love to draw,which is freedom.

"SELF TAUGHT" means you were born under a rcok and stayed under that rock your whole life. Seeing and expiriencing and tracing and just seeing things is being taught.

The only time I ever traced anything was for a tattoo that I couldn't draw up or when I was a child. Other than that, I've been self-taught. You may have your views but just because you went to school doesn't make you the best, either, man. We ALL learn different ways!

Im not saying not to be proud of your art. Your art is amazing! I'm saying that not being in an art class isn't something to be extra proud of as if it gives you an advantage to being a better artist than one who had gone to an art class

Well, thank you very much for the comment about my art, but I still disagree with you on people going to art class and people who are self taught. We all learn in various ways to draw and to be amazing artists, and to me, it doesn't matter if you've never been to a single art class in your life. Like sure, you can learn VERY much from a class, I took a few classes and didn't like how they told you that you could express yourself... but you had to do it their way. I thought expressing yourself was doing it on your own? Controlling others in how they're supposed to express themselves isn't the right way to teach someone anything at all.
