Description
"Calling Sky Captain..."Ok, you have no idea how long I have been waiting for this movie to be released...well, if you saw my last couple submissions in my scraps folder, maybe you do, but after almost a year of waiting, the day is finally here...
Not that I've gotten to see it yet. I started this at 10:45 pm and just finished now at about 4 am. Had I had my watercolor block, it would have been a lot faster I'm sure, but I had to figure out how to get the right watercolor look I wanted in Photoshop, so yes, it was painted digitally. If I get a new watercolor block, I may try it traditionally as well.
At any rate, Joe 'Sky Captain' Sullivan from Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow done in an art deco style.
Now, a word about Sky Captain. I highly encourage everyone to go out and support this film. Regardless of any other factors, this is one of the most unique and artistic experiments to come along in awhile. Not only that, but this is not a studio film in the tradional sense. This started out as one guy's project he worked on in his garage. Yes, a studio picked it up from the demo reel he set up and paid for production, but it still remains the product of an artistic imagination and that's something I'd like to see more of in the entertainment industry.
Media: Drawing done with dark brow watercolor pencil, all painting done in Photoshop.
Sky Captain is copyright Paramount.

I love this movie so much. Glad to see there are others out there. Go Sky Captain! And this style goes very well with this movie.

You have captured Sky Captain's air of dashing and derring-do perfectly here. Excellent work!
As for the film itself, while I agree wholeheartedly that the humble, visionary origin of the film is refreshing and that the film is pure, pulpy fun, I still feel that it went far too over-the-top to make for engaging cinema. The Rocketeer (which I maintain is one of the most under-rated films of all time and better than Indiana Jones in this subgenre) handled the 1930's serial-film sense of adventure with just enough restraint to keep the whole affair classy and engaging. Sky Captain seemed like a nonstop stream of outlandish pulp vomited uncontrollably onto the screen. Still good, silly fun though.
What do you think?
Again, excellent work. I would love to see a polished version of this image.

Sky Captain is one of my favorite movies <3
Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Angelina Jolie were amazing in that movie. I especially love the bicker between Polly and Joe. Pure genius.
Anyway - lovely picture (; Like all of your others are. -I love the style! 8D-

Nifty pic, nifty movie (has seen it...basically think of a motion picture version of old 30's/40's radio serials like "The Shadow" or *ESPECIALLY* "Captain Midnight"...very very cool)

I thought it was watercolour! Beautiful. And you have convinced me to take hubby and go catch a flick! Perchance were you ever a rocketeer fan (comic or movie)? Flying and that era are just a grand package in film and storytelling. >^-^<

Our tastes are just so similar...
Rocketeer is one of those father/daughter movies for me. He and I went to see it together when it first came out and both adored it. So we always watch reruns of it together and such.

If I ever get around to it, I'll let you know, but I'm thinking now I'd rather use a technique I haven't used since my freshman year in highschool using a watercolor underpainting and color pencil over it.

Really interesting use of lines to create a dynamic nature to an otherwise simple piece. (well, visually simple A really great use of simplicity to create a sophisticated composition.

It does look interesting. And with it's 50's back to 40's air wars mixed in with present sci fi look, I bet you were definitely going to enjoy this. It does look interesting. And you did a good job drawing it. ^^

Thanks
I have gotten to see it now and I abslolutly adore this film. One of the most visually stunning and artfully put together since Moulin Rouge. I don't know if the box office will take note, but I seriously hope the Academy does.

Me too! Me too! I was waiting for this movie for the longest time. I even had my final thesis presentation themed Sky Captain style
Love the Art Deco style in this. The minimal angled lines and the washed out colors work well with the theme
