Ah, yes--Mycroft Hardwicke's so-called "Pocket Disgronificator". The Portable Curiosity and Mystery of Science, found in 1896 in the base of a Mayan tomb, alongside the skeleton of a very non-Mayan explorer who disappeared a century before. Note the twin jewels of Jade and Beryllium, the only visible power source of the device. Their ghostly glow lights a room on a moonless night, and the buzz it emits makes dogs howl for miles around. No one has managed to get it open, or even discern its function. It was reported to have disappeared from one owner's vest pocket and reappeared in a locked office a continent away. Timepieces run backward in its presence, compasses spin and nearby radios broadcast an earsplitting whine. Gentlemen who have owned and tinkered with it have had the peculiar habit of disappearing, leaving behind only their sooty footprints. Associated with at least two incidences of Spontaneous Human Combustion and three suicides, not to mention the persistent whispering heard by its owners, the last being the American writer Ambrose Bierce, who carried it with him on his fateful trip to Mexico in 1913. While he was never found, the device was, holding down a note scrawled in what looked like blood. The note, which itself subsequently disappeared, was said to mention the reason for the device, its makers and Bierce's several attempts to destroy it. "It has spoken to me," he said, "has shown me its true purpose. I cannot stop it, nor live with this terrible knowledge." It is rumored to be in the archive of a British museum, though no one can seem to find it.

Why does that sound familiar?
