In the frame, a fully flexible frame, the artist has said she doesn't like to crop therefore I consider what's in the god damn frame.

If the photographer were to of moved from his/her position, it would of essentially negated the fact that this is a time-capture photo. It was meant to be a photo to show what is happening through the eyes of the photographer. It's actually a very good technique.

What do you mean what?
The artist does not crop photos, so for the girl to not be in the photo he/she would of had to move ruining what this style of photography is essentially about.

Sure. Even some of the most famous photographers have had photos that had an out of focus subject in the front...not only is it part of the way a camera functions at the settings used for this shot, but it can add to the whole scene.

She just naturally stares at the barrell of a camera, leans into a bordered frame, smiles and is conveniently placed to allow full view of the old man.
Technically, she is posed.

1. to assume a particular attitude or stance, esp. with the hope of impressing others: He likes to pose as an authority on literature.
2. to present oneself insincerely: He seems to be posing in all his behavior.
3. to assume or hold a physical attitude, as for an artistic purpose: to pose for a painter.
It is implied that a posed photograph is insincere, that it is not genuine because it has been carefully set up.
Consider the following possibility:
Two individuals are sitting in a cafe when one of them notices a strange character. A photograph is taken. The girl may or may not have even known what has occured. I can't imagine how you could call that a pose. Your comment is stupid and ignorant.

slickertm In reply to dersunde [2006-10-15 01:50:47 +0000 UTC]
Wow, you obviously took what I said wrong, as if you took it how I set the tone you would not call me stupid and ignorant as there was never the intention of getting to that level.
But now you've said it I'll continue,
I believe that desciption of 'pose' is incorrect, sincerity I believe can be built by a good posuer or actor for a photo, candid posing also exists, but you've gone out of you're way to justify yourself. Congratulations.
Bitch.
You had others to lay your petty insults on.

Cool. Well I guess when the dictionaries are being revised, they'll surely hire ~slickertm to aid the process. I'm not here to lay insults. I'm here to clarify the fact that every person criticising this deviation as a DD has next to nothing in their gallery which makes them a credible critic. If that's an insult... well then, I guess the truth hurts.

Yeah, well while you may be impressed with your own face and body enough to endlessly perpetuate a seemingly obsessive self-indulgent vanity complex offering little more than simple exposition, I on the other hand am not impressed.
And now that I look closer, it seems that the only images that remotely resemble an interesting photograph weren't even made by you. Would I be mistaken to regard the opinion of someone with ability and experience over that of someone without it? Ie. People who lack the background to technically or intellectually critique but who fancy themselves critics nevertheless. Sounds like fun, maybe I'll try it some day if I become pompous enough. (I'm still accumulating steam.)

slickertm In reply to dersunde [2006-10-15 12:21:45 +0000 UTC]
You know what, fuck you.
I work fucking hard to create shit, and I expect critique, but do it through calling my photos shit at the source, go on my deviant art page, read a poem, say you don't like the techiniques I use, say the favs I get are undeserved because one of the stanzas doesn't hold continuity to the theme of the photo. instead you jump on photos which are the easiest for you to attack.
You lazy mother fucker. Impressed by myself eh? Why the need to post all this here, when you didn't even think to read ahead. I may work with myself as a model when I was 17 and had no other boy who would where a dress and stand in ballet poses, but take a look at yourself in that post, your certainly pompous enough.

Hey, this is good.
I wouldn't pick apart your literature because I haven't done better. But then, I don't think your poetry or prose is deserving of being picked apart. In fact, I think writing is much more worthy of your time than telling people what's wrong with their photos. Of course, you have every right to do that too, but I also have every right to refute those comments.
The reason I picked photos is because you were offering a negative critique of photography, it only seems fair, no?

slickertm In reply to dersunde [2006-10-15 13:38:21 +0000 UTC]
Mhm, i guess the best and worst part about deviant art not having a post editing system on deviations is you have to deal with both the shit you serve and have been served.
But I don't think just because you haven't taken a photo which someone else merits as better automatically rules you out of critiqing something. I mean people critique Shakespeare, short hand held camera film makers critique block busters.
I studied art as a major and am in the middle of a degree in it, but none of it should add towards or take away why I can critique a work.
Does it?

dersunde In reply to slickertm [2006-10-15 13:59:19 +0000 UTC]
I don't mean to imply that you _must_ be a superior... well, I'll just say 'artist' (for lack of a better word ) in order to critique. It would be at least ideal, though, to demonstrate a certain competency in whichever area. It doesn't rule you out of critiquing but lacking the knowledge and experience to really understand the elements at play in creating a particular work makes your opinion less substantiated. Also, if you have more knowledge of the process, you can appreciate it to a greater extent.
Maybe people are critiquing Shakespeare, maybe a bunch of cool guys are critiquing hollywood flicks - how often do you read a movie review and then see the movie and completely disagree? Happens some of the time here. If the guys making critiques of movies were such great writers then I guess they'd be writing some decent movies instead. There's a handy quote, maybe you've heard it and maybe you haven't. "Those who can't, critique." Sure it's cynical and maybe not so black and white, but it holds a certain truth.
I think you're right about the best/worst aspect. On one hand there's a lot of terrible thoughtless communication exchanges happening on this site. On the other hand, the social networking is what makes it what it is. Comments allow the site to thrive. Much of it I find gross, but there's no other site like DA.

Well. Ouch.
I try to write poetry sometimes.
That made me feel really horrible. Me and your friend actually started having fun on the other deviation. I don't think it was very polite of you to spread your disliking of me to this deviation. I'm sure this man has much better things to fill his time with.
Wow, I actually don't think anyone has said something that horrible to me. Maybe I'll thank you someday, but I think I've grown since taking alot of those photos, you try and share and someone finds a way to throw your efforts at you.
Maybe your angry at me about the other picture, but yeah, like I said, you probably should've sent your insults through a note, that way I could've privately felt like shit.

Alright. I have a couple things to say. First, if you're going to play the victim now, I'd like to call your attention back to all of the comments you made attempting to discredit this photograph and consider that they have an author just as does anything in on display in your gallery. My replies were my attempts to have you reconsider your approach, eventually resulting in my critique of what you have to share. I feel that if you are willing to call out the faults in the work of others you should be willing to accept them on your own. I would not have come across your gallery and made an unprovoked comment such as this in passing.
I believe that if you intend to be honest to yourself and to your audience, then you will do something positive with the growth you mentioned, and you do seem sincere in expressing it. The talent you show in your writing makes this evident.
You are making me think long and hard about this because I am starting to see a certain open-mindedness to your comments, while still being stubborn. And almost a willingness to debate. But I think your curt and non-commital comebacks encouraged me to take it farther. I'm trying now to reread and reinterpret your comments because it comes as a surprise to me that you'd even be offended, let alone insulted. Anyway - it is difficult because there is so little to go on in what you replied to me. I felt only a willingness to disagree with me while not offering much explanation why.

Yeah, everything is posed then. The entire shot is posed.
Seriously though, I believe she was laughing at something I said. In fact, she's quite pissed off that she ended up in the frame at all and would have moved had she realized this. I tend to pull the camera up to my face a lot so she tends to ignore it entirely. In fact, I barely have any photos of her at all.

No way is worth a DD, Its not art, its just a funny image. To be honest the guys proberly sneezing or something. Why not crop that blurred bird out? Not art..... I hate it when crappy, random stuff gets a DD. It puts them in the same catogry as all the fantastic, things that peaple have spent hours and hours doing. Some geezer just takes a photo of some random lass and it appears the bloke in the background is pulling a silly face. Not trying to sound to harsh, its just my opinion. To be honest, its lame.

I have to agree with you there, although in a less harsh way. It's not such a great shot, and I don't think it really needs a DD, the humour is rather shallow. Also, I hope that israel is not referred to as the enemy here, because that is one thing that they are not.
This doesn't belong in the daily deviation category all.

I agree with this poster. If you want to check out some works of depth, check out his gallery. Especially the fractals. Just cause you don't like it, it doesn't mean it's not art. Crop her out? Haha. If you think this is random- check DDs more often, a lot of crap gets DD'd (just now I see a DD which is nothing more than a phrase, 10 words), and this does NOT belong in that crap category. You make it sound like every photograph is crap, just cause people don't spend hours and hours making it. There is nothing random about this, if you'd read some comments, you'd know that he saw the old man's face, took out the camera and shot it. Not all photographs can be staged. And if you'd check out the artist's gallery, you'd see he more than deserves a DD.
