half of the people who responded to this photo need a pick-axe to the forehead.

blurring the girl added intrigue to this photo for me, personally. I looked at it and went, "wait...why's she blurred?" then my eye moved around to find what the real subject was. When I found it, unexpectedly, I chortled and spit out a bit of my drink.

and, to throw in some hardcore-honesty, I have never really appreciated nor respected photography as an artform. I hope you're not, like, heartbroken and dismayed by that, because I had a genuine response to this photo which is incredibly rare for me, as a non-photography-lover. It's photos like this that I think are the real art, since they capture something that elicits a reaction out of me. Fuck their lighting and paid models, fuck their "depth" - that doesn't mean they're artists. SO HURRAY FOR YOU!

Photography can be an artform, a form of some sort of art taking on such properties, but I won't get into whether it actually is art. I've ranted enough about that for a lifetime. Suffice it to say that it may not be respected anymore because modern photography is not real, as you've pointed out.

Lovely candid shot! It's one of those things that you just say "I'm glad I had my camera with me" for...

What kind of camera were you using, and what size lens, out of curiousity?

I always have some camera on me, even when I go to the bathroom. Anyways, I was using a Leica M6 with a 35mm lens.

This is an interesting photo; may I suggest that it would of looked better if the man and the area around him (his paper, the table he's sitting at, etc.) were focused more? I think that would of made it look amazing.

I personally like the natural flow of this photo. Fact is, it does what photography is supposed to do. Immortalize a moment in time.

godhatesphysics In reply to ChristinasDream [2006-10-15 04:43:47 +0000 UTC]

On further inspection, I have finally realized why it looks out of focus. It is, in fact, not out of focus. The focus is dead on his face.

Unfortunately, I was using 64 iso colour slide film at the time and this is an indoor shot. My estimates would place this at f/2 and a shutter speed of 1/30th of a second. What does that mean? Well, it means camera shake is the reason for lack of exacting sharpness, but critical focus is still in the right place.

ChristinasDream In reply to godhatesphysics [2006-10-15 20:19:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you're right now that I look at it more. I don't know why I didn't think of that...duhr

The slightest camera movement has ruined a shot or two that I've really liked before, too.

ok for those who say its art... and for those who say its not art. (im just postin on this cuz im bored and i want attention... i could care less)

art as defined by dictionarty.com

1. the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

this is not art. it does not follow the aesthetic principles of art which must be followed in order to be considered art. at least untill your dead.. .then it can be art at any cost.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

ChristinasDream In reply to Mischieftech [2006-10-15 03:13:29 +0000 UTC]

It has expression and realm, though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

godhatesphysics In reply to Mischieftech [2006-10-15 00:09:53 +0000 UTC]

I cannot find anywhere where I actually said that this was art. In fact, I am contributing to the large pool of deviations on Deviant Art which is NOT art. I am attempting to bring down the quality of this site.

Do I win a prize?

I guess I could have turned it into art by post processing it for a few hours, perhaps placing studio lights around, used a paint brush on it for a while.. I don't know.

What is art? Thank you for defining it for me with a dictionary. I'm sure your life could be summed up similarly in one line.

ooooooooooooooooo snap! bringin in the fightin words! first off i dont recal ever sayin you did say it was art, nor that i was directing that comment to you. infact i remember typing that it was to EVERYONE who said it either was or was not art... so direting that last line there was rather uncalled for dont ya think? but if you wanna make a personal fight or something... i got a few minutes to spare before the movie

I am, we have developed a love hate relationship, I also am ignoring if it's you or you're friend talking since you have the same DevStatus and similar avatar so that makes it even more fun.

Someone should make a movie with Madonna and that ugly girl from Herbie Reloaded (Lindsay Lohan thats it!) about us.

I mean no one would see it, but we could judge it heavily.

Bitch!

I haven't seen the new one either, used to watched the episodes. Lindsay Lohan is icky.

Well, as is said a lot on this site, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. What most of them don't realize is that most opinions are just dead wrong

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

slickertm In reply to godhatesphysics [2006-10-15 01:58:07 +0000 UTC]

Opinions can't be 'wrong' or 'right', they can be impractical, illogical or out of context, but since opinions are self evaluated, someone saying a minimilist work is just 'paint slobbed on a canvas' can't be considered wrong, just like someone saying this peice doesn't deserve recognition as a representation of street photography can't be wrong.

M, see how I used what you and your friend were saying against your opinions, that's a technique of political speech writing, clever eh.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

godhatesphysics In reply to slickertm [2006-10-15 02:17:05 +0000 UTC]

Well, that's rather interesting. If I may interpret what you say; It seems to me that you are very self conscious of your own opinions and need the rest of the world to be subjective in order to hide your obvious faults. It actually seems as if you've been told of your faults before and this comes through in this line "since opinions are self evaluated", which states that you are aware of this problem. Also, the way you say that they can't be wrong or right, yet they can be impractical, illogical or out of context, states to me that you do not have a good understanding of your own true feelings in the matter.

See how I used what you said and twisted it into some sort of vague insight into your character? That's called deconstructionism and the world would be a better place without it.
