Description
There's nothing like walking through a crowd with the camera to your eye. You may feel hesitant because you are so close to them. I know I do.There are moments where I envy those who, frankly, don't care if they're making anyone uncomfortable with their camera. I can't do that and I do feel uncomfortable every time I raise my camera to steal a moment from those who don't know me. There are times though, when I just head straight into a crowd, never letting my eye part from the camera.
It induces a tunnel vision. It reduces the chaos of the world into compose, shoot, compose and shoot. Sometimes, it's too quick and fleeting to judge whether that last moment you took was worth even the effort of depressing the shutter. Sometimes, you don't care.
They call it tunnel vision to see such a small thing and ignore everything else. This prose is dedicated to the street shooters out there. You may not find the moment interesting, but you'll recognize it for what it is.
What is it? It's what we do. Walk with me sometime.

I have trouble with just taking pictures of people too.
It's completely legal, but I don't want them to see me do it!
And a long lens is cheating.

Great words, and an interesting idea, definitely have to try this sometime. People only usually notice when things change. So walking around with a camera to your eye will probably draw less attention than constantly moving it up and down...
I'm usually too chicken to do more than shoot from the hip, but I should try more. It's amazing what Joel Meyerowitz seems to get away with, though I suppose a big city is easier to work with...

ok not to scare you tho.
I sometimes scare parents. I don't know if they think I'm a pervert or some crazy person. They grab their kids and leave quickly. ahahah .. oh the memories.
I will stand two feet away and take your photo. I am the unseen!
are you into flickr? because if you are, me and myprivateparty have started a Life Observed group there.
photos like these are so cool to me, because it's like they don't even know what you are doing .. sometimes they don't seem to care. just another dude with a camera.
capaturing life as of right now in the time of today. (if that makes sense)

Eh, I'm not scared. I wish people would take photos of me, so I can whip out my camera and take their photo first! Then turn away and deny them the shot. Hahahaha!
MWUAHAHAHAHA!

Dude,
That is by far one of the best descriptons of real street shooting that have ever heard.
It captures that feeling ya only get when your doing it.
None of this "street" with a 300mm zoom.
35mm 50mm thats street. Right up with them.
Feeling the moment.
Its what I do too.
And we should walk together sometime.

What the fuck? 300mm zoom? People do that?
I thought 300mm zooms were for wildlife! Then again.. humans are pretty good wildlife.

Yup I know one dude who came to me and showed me a "candid" of a homeless guy.
Something didint look right about it. It was totally wrong.
I said, how big was the zoom, he said 300mm.
He thought it was street
I told him otherwise
If your within enough distance that you run the risk of them hearing th thwapp, then its street
Fucking 300mm I laughed for a while after that
Heheh MrRockwell should try street

I've got to agree with that!
These 'street portraits', where the photog stands half a mile away stealthily shooting...very bizarre. They're more like snipers than photographers.
