Which makes it even worse to assume Japan is a small island state?

you have no idea of the effect of gratitude. It'd might not be most direct way to be helpful but it encourages more people to donate and inspire others to help in different ways, which may very well save lives.

So, why just Japan then?
Why not Indonesia, when three hundred thousand died in a Tsunami?
Or Haiti, when the poorest country in the Western hemisphere was devastated by an earthquake?
Or Gaza, where an Apartheid is occurring and people live in constant fear?
Or is the country only important when the people can draw cute chibis?

Haiti had a massive response when the earthquake hit it, The teams in japan are far less than there was send to Haiti.
Gaza not somewhere that requested any outside help and infact certain groups would refuse foreign influence, the situation is political and also the problem tends to come from beyound the borders of gaza.
Japan has not had a massive appeal, when haiti was hit their was a massive media campaign as with any highly publicised disaster, gaza doesn't get attention as much because it has been in termoil for a long time and is no longer sensational news (sad news teams put sensationlism first)
The reason why your seeing more about japan at the moment is simple -> The earthquake just hit and the media always are going stupid with the idea of japan turning into a nuclear wasteland.

I think they'd prefer money donated to red cross or msf than a picture.

Yes indeed. Don't just pray, that won't do much. We need to donate. Show how much we care. That's what makes the REAL difference. (but praying is nice too ^^ )

Praying does spread awareness. Although I'm not religious and I rarely donate to anything, but my thoughts are with them.

It's: Japane never "fell" after Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
But it will never fall as long it is supported by the people around the world.

See, this is what art supporting Japan should be. I'm sure those affected in Japan don't want to see everyone sulking on their behalf, they want to hear encouraging and caring words for their support. Great work.

I hate to be a pessimist, but believe me, the second something else happens, we'll all drop then and go worry and fret and 'care' about them.
It's just the way we are, I mean, there are people being gunned down by their government in Libya, but ya know what?
No one cares.

Agreed. People just have short attention spans, I wonder whatever happened to those people that had a tsunami in like 2002 or whatever that my school was so concerned about that we donated a lot of money to them.
