And yes I know Marceline's outfit is sort of a mash of several different ones. I love them all don't judge me.
And also yes I do know Marceline was a kid during/just after the Mushroom War. Don't tell me these thingsss. She looked better in the sketch grown up with her axe bass.

Alright so what if Finn's ancestor was Marceline's best friend, but escaped to a vault and Marcy didn't know. The Finn and jake tree house thing is where her friend's house was, so thinking her friend was dead marceline planted a seed there?

On the Wiki it's assumed it's the Mushroom War (possibly a nuclear war: mushroom = mushroom cloud) which wiped out humanity. Some of the creators have alluded to this too; that there was a huge explosion of radiation wiping out most life and causing a crater in a quarter of the planet.

I think the actual show isn't planning to address it until somewhere in the third season. But I guess people look more at the happy rainbow candyland of Ooo and don't think too much into the whole wiped-out-humanity deal? I'm not sure. But either way, it's an interesting backstory to what's put forward as a kids' show, right?
