Description That's right! Lefties do it Upside down or Back to front.

When lefthanded people do calligraphy, the pen in their hand is leaning to the left, so if they tried to letter in the righthanded way, they would have to push the strokes, which doesn't quite work. That doesn't mean lefthanders can't do calligraphy! I'm lefthanded, and don't find it particularly difficult. It only means we need to learn it in a different way. For example, you can letter upside down, or you can reverse the stroke direction and order.

Nice little insight for those that don't know; the struggles of being a lefty in this righthanded (religious)society. Especially as a child everything is mirrored when you're given a righthanded example on board. I couldn't figure it out. It proberly explains my mirrored writings in my earlier days. Anyway good conceptual work. Love it!

Hi can I use this image to make a t-shirt for my dad?  He's just started Calligraphy at the age of 82 and is struggling as a Leftie!  Thought it would cheer him up. !!

Thanks from a fellow leftie! This particular piece is what gave me confidence to finally turn the page upside-down for good - which immediately resolved lots and lots of my problems, especially with gothic scripts.

you study everything in such a detailed way...
Do you still do calligraphy now?

I'm a lefty and I'm not a friend of this technique of turning the page 90° and writing like that. Instead I'm the 'bottom up' kind who has their hand above the line and starts from the baseline (inevitably smudging the previously written line because the blotting paper moved) .

Nice illustration there. I never tried that back to front thing where you have the angle the other way. It should change the shape of the letters considerably though- unless you mirror them.

I don't like the 90° turn either, try turning it upside down 180°, and make upside-down letters from right to left, that way your hand will be ahead of the letters, not behind. It's only a short time to get used to seeing your work being upside down

I definitely have to try that. It's probably just breaking with certain habits like holding the pen a certain way that might stand in my way. The way I currently do it has the disadvantage of the letters being difficult to align with proper spacing; I've been struggling with that quite a bit.

That's really good! I often wondered how left-handed people would do calligraphy, though I have heard of left-handed calligraphy pens that are angled specifically so that lefties can make the same strokes as righties, but I've heard mixed reviews about them, some people love them and some people can't stand them.

they are also hard to come by, so one just learns to do without them
