Description
In the moonlight there are musesblowing bubbles like ideas.
They drift away into the sky,
holding dreams for you and me.
This is the long-awaited 25,000 hits kiriban prize for ~Kinneko . See? Told ya I'd finish it by Christmas! I really hope you like it!
The muses in the picture are Shirak (purple) and Gair (green) and they are ~Kinneko and *Tiranth 's story muses. They are dragon-human hybrids, and Kin requested them in their human forms. I had this idea of them sitting together and blowing bubbles, and each bubble had an idea in it for someone to find and use. Maybe one of the bubbles is for you?
Anyway, I hope Kin and Tir like this, I worked very closely from the reference pictures you gave, though I did take a few artistic liberties mostly to give them my own spin โ I hope they are still mostly accurate!
Anyway, this is colored pencils on illustration board. Took weeks and weeks of work in between projects and Christmas shopping (whoever said Christmas break was relaxing? You f4il!) Shirak and Gair are ยฉ ~Kinneko and *Tiranth .
Um, yeah, disclaimer time: *Agent-Elrond hereby grants ~Kinneko and *Tiranth permission to repost, resuse, and edit this image in any way they please. Just linky back to me in credits, 'kay?

Ahah.... I'm sooo very sorry for the extremely belated comment (better late than never?) but I got so caught up with my senior year of school that every time I wanted to leave a comment, I was afraid it wouldn't be full of my appreciation and how much respect for you. I also didn't want to come off as a suck up fan or something like that =/
Anyway... I remember seeing this the first day you posted it (I snuck on at school in the library, DeviantART is one of the few "log in" sites that isn't blocked. I was awestruck. I love your work, I know what your work looks like... but to see my muse in your style, she looks so alive--maybe not realistically, no. I mean like... she has a design. I can try to draw her all I want, I can try to draw any character of mine that I want, but it's such an incredible thing to see your own character drawn by someone else.
On the picture itself, I'm simply in love with Gair. There's this very faint look of determination on her face. I think Tir and I wrote a bubble scene before you posted this... Gair had never seen bubble blowers before, and was having trouble creating her own bubbles.
I also adore the idea of each bubble being an idea. When I was younger, and me and Tir wrote A LOT more, Gair and Shirak were always coming up with ideas for our stories. Unfortunately, the two muses have somewhat seperated... Shirak is writing solo with her writer and Gair is kinda moody with me, we haven't been able to write any stories lately (well, we actually managed to write a short story the other day, maybe I'll note it to you--you might like it =] )
Whenever I see this picture... it just warms me. Maybe not the warm and fuzzy "zomg this awsome artist drew mah character!" feeling, but the warm, inspiring feeling you get when you feel good about what you like to do.
Now I'm getting all weird and philosophical x_x Lolz.
Bottom line--I love it, I love it, I love it, and I can't say that enough for the months I neglected commenting. I hope this obscenly... monstrously long comment gives you that uber warm feeling too ^-^

Okayโฆ *takes deep calming breaths*
She likes it! She likes it!!!! Yaaaaaaay!
I am so happy you and Tir like it! Please do note me the story if you have time!
Oh, and I don't know if you got my original note: but the offer still stands if you would like to have the original. Just note me with a mailing address and I can ship it to you (as it is the piece is tucked away in my art folder and needs a good home).
Yaaaaaay! *does happy dance*

you know what, i'm not even fazed by your incredibly heart-stopping art. it makes me want to aspire to your art level, yes, but it doesn't have that jealous feeling i usualy have . this is so very good.

Oh good! I'd hate to make someone feel jealous โ it's much better to be inspired, in my experience. ^^
Anyway, I'm so glad I can give visual encouragement, as it were. Thanks for the fave!

i was wondering, how long did the colors take you to achieve and what method did you use? (crosshatch, light-darken, other??)

The colors took ages. Well, not really. It felt like ages.
Honestly, I think the coloring took about five or six hours, total, but spread over several days.
And my general technique with colored pencils is to start of with a dark color (like black) and put down the shadows, and then just move lighter and lighter, until I've got four or five layers of color on top of each other, and then I take a "finishing" color and rub it in until the texture is smooth and painterly, and not all grainy. For dark areas I try to use translucent, medium dark colors (like 50% french gray for the rocks), and opaque, light colors (white, cream, light peach) for the light areas. Finally, I always add a sheen of white over whatever is most directly lit, to make it stand out.
And then sometimes I'll put down a base of light color, and then do the dark parts. This is if the entire thing is going to be light: like a cloudscape or a day sky: where the dark parts are not that dark. By putting down a base of light color, you can give yourself more flexibility with how light the dark parts are, but you can never get them as dark. But I didn't use that much in this piece, except for their skin.
Whew! I hope that can give you some ideas!

gasp!
this is amazingly helpful! thank you so much, this is like, THE new guide for my pencil crayon works. thanks again
i understand the immense timeframe it takes to get a peice done to one's standards, i did a lighter to darker press of color, and it took me two weeks to do (Cloaked in Night)
this is great, i can't express how joyeous i am,

Yay! I'm glad I could be of help!
Another thing is: I use Prismacolor pencils, which are very expensive, but are really soft and easy to blend, which helps with my layering technique. You can do this with pretty much any pencil or crayon, of course, but in my experience Prismacolors are the best for it.
And yes, colored pencils take time! And they tire me out also: I can barely work for an hour at a time and then my hand gets tired.

ah, my hands start to hurt too. i also use prismcolors, which i recognised from your work, and thus i asked because you already have years of experiance with them.

Yay prismas!!!
Oh, and one thing I've found that helps on cold days is to soak my hands in hot water before I start drawing, so the muscles are all warmed up. Just make sure to dry them thoroughly otherwise they cool off right away and get the paper wet. >.<

For some reason, it gives this feel of depth, which drags you in making you stand, look at the sky and watch the bubbles...

Oh yay!
I always try to give my drawings that "depth" feelโฆ I'm glad I succeeded!

This is so beautiful - I love the mixture of blues and greens ^^ The way the bubbles "glow" like that is wonderfully captured!
Merry Christmas
