They're popular, the guilds babies, and also just a tooouch racist against "bad" pokemon like Salandit.
We've got Toph the smart one (Eevee), Gale/Galahad the pretentious anime protagonist-ish Riolu, and Diana, the badass tough girl Charmander.
Should also be mentioned these guys are some of my favorite pokemon, they're just here and the rivals to play with expectations
