Description In memory of the late Layne Thomas Staley, August 22, 1967-April 5, 2002. Rest in peace

"Core", written by Layne:

Self Imprisonment

I Suppose somewhere inside me

I yearn for freedom from

That which holds me stagnant

Over exaggeration turns underestimated

Emotion....

Emotion. Why the urgency to hide and

Slow the flow of that which could

and perhaps will, improve and

Heal the burning inside

I am protecting my Pain

It is Mine

And I so badly want to keep my

pain to myself

But in doing so I am hurting

So Many who cross or care for me

Aching for love and acceptance

Only to throw you down in the latter

Of Love & shared Love

Yet Anger & guilt not shared between

me & you

You are blamed for all that is a mystery

Within myself - Burning

Oh I pray that I might someday

Throw a blanket over that angry child

If the strength is found within the

core of my being

his tears soak my heart & weight

it down

I am tired, I am numb & I am so very, very lonely

I am......

Wow, this is amazing. I was going to ask you how big the piece was but saw you used pencil on computer paper. I used to always work in pencil and some charcoal, but really got into using pastel chalks to do huge colored pieces.

Thank you You know, it's funny.. I used to do more work in dry pastel before I got into pencil, or especially charcoal so much. I like pastels, but I've often gotten frustrated with them, because I only have the stump kind. So it's hard to get any real detail with them. But I think next time I go to the art store, I'll try to pick up some pastel pencils, since I feel like putting some color into my pieces again Those should allow me to pick out the details nicely. In the past I've also liked to combine a bit of dry pastel into my charcoal pieces too.

Lately though I've felt like going back to drawing with plain old pencil again.. just nice and simple (and not so messy). It's been a while since I've done that, so I had a really good time drawing this picture of Layne. I'm glad you like it

Wow really good work!! I like the eyes, there's a lot of emotion. What did you use to work ? pencil? charcoal?

Thank you! His eyes are my favorite to draw.. I never get tired of drawing them I just went back to plain old graphite for this one I think I'm gonna go back to pencils for a while now.. I've been in a charcoal phase for a long time! Oh, and I also drew this on regular white computer paper.. so it had like no tooth whatsoever.. and I don't think charcoal would have worked so well But I just used a few different types of leads for this.. a lot of 2H, and HB, and then 8B for the darkest areas. And I used a regular mechanical pencil for the fine details, which I think is about the equivalent to an HB... So basically I just used about three different pencils I'm really glad you like it and think it's an emotive piece

It's a really good piece! That's very pleasant to work on a subject that you like ^^ you have an 8B pencil? I'm looking after one, but it's not easy to find!

GoldenPear In reply to Altayr [2009-04-13 08:16:33 +0000 UTC]

Yep, it came in a pencil kit that I received as a gift. I have a feeling I'm going to have a hard time finding a replacement though, when this one runs out. So I'll probably have to start using 6B again. I'm not really that picky though. I'll probably just have to lighten the values of the entire drawing a bit, since I won't have the blackest of pencils for the darks. Good luck on your quest for one though!

Ok! I wish to try working with 8B, to have a real contrast between the light parts and the dark ones. It gives a good dimension to the drawing ^^ But if I don't find one it's not really important

I know what you mean I do hope you find one My theory with art is I pretty much just use what I have. If I have an 8B pencil, fantastic! But if not, then I just have to find another way to do things. It keeps things exciting that way anyways

wow, this is awesome! the detail and emotion are impeccable. I think the the best layne drawing I've seen. I love how revealing this pic is. the hair is great and works very well for the picture! great job! I love it.

I'm going to fave it asap ( I'm on a phone right now so I can't)

Thank you! I was hoping you'd love it since I know you're a fan of Layne's I tried very hard to incorporate the bittersweet feeling I feel today.. on the anniversary of his passing It's hard for me to describe in words, so I'm glad it came across to you in the drawing

Don't mention it. I definitely am an AIC and Layne fan. It was musical magic when Layne an Jerry would sing their vocal harmonies.

It really did. I'm sure Layne would've loved it.

You really are becoming an excellent artist! I'm always looking forward to your new pieces. Thanks for sharing with all of us. I can't wait until your next work.

Speaking of Layne and Jerry's harmonies...I just found THE MOST AMAZING video on Youtube! Check this out: [link] This guy has managed to extract the vocals only from 'No Excuses' and has silenced the instrumentals. It just gives me chills to listen to it.. it's like they're singing a cappela! I think you'll love it

And thank you so very much That really means a ton to me I will continue to try to bring out my best work. I have some exciting ideas for pieces I've been thinking about lately

Wow, that is really great! I knew they had great voices and sound unbelievable together but this really did blow my mind. Vocal harmonies is definitely something I'm going to try to incorporate into my music. Thanks for sharing!

Cool! I can't wait to see them. Oh and btw, do you take requests at all? I don't really have anything particular in mind right now but I just thought I'd ask.

You're welcome I really really hope that guy can manage to extract more vocals from other Alice songs. I requested that he do 'Got Me Wrong'.. I think that one would sound especially amazing But hey, I'll be happy if he does any more at all!

And hmm, well.. feel free to make a request if you ever want to I'm not making any guarantees, but if you request something that really catches my interest, I may give it a try! There's no harm in at least asking, right? You just might inspire me

I hope he does more too! that'd be cool

Cool, I just thought I'd ask.

Okay, I'll try to think of inspiring things...

Actually I can't begin to say how much dA's users have inspired me since I joined. I'm really glad i did. It's been great.

I'm so glad I joined too You know.. it's really hard for me to imagine not having this venue for sharing my artwork now. It just makes me feel so much more 'worldly', I guess, being able to share it with you guys. It truly does inspire me when I get feedback from people I would never have imagined would see and appreciate my artwork.

And yeah, like I said, feel more than welcome to make a request if an idea ever pops into your head!

Oh, and I don't know if you noticed already.. but I forgot to mention that that guy also extracted the vocals from 'Man in the Box', and he's also done two other videos where he extracted the guitar on Man in the Box, and also another where he extracted the drums from 'No Excuses'. They're great for playing along with Just check out his videos on his page, and I'm sure you'll find um in a snap.

Man.. I just keep wishing he'll do more. They're just so interesting to listen to.

I think there is the option to stay logged in.. like you check a box and it will remember you each time you go to Youtube. Or it does for me each time anyways, and has ever since I can remember. So let me tell you, it is very annoying whenever I happen to be on another computer and go to fave a video and realize I'm not logged in for once in a blue moon

yeah I know, but then a sibling would maybe mess around with my account.

I'm always having to be careful to log out of all of my e-mails and accounts. so unless I actively am doing something with it, I normally can't be bothered to sign in. I can still watch videos so i forget half the time as well.

Yeah, I remember the days when I didn't have my laptop and had to use the family desktop. It was kind of a pain, but then again, we only had dial-up back then, so I wasn't really on all that much. Since the advent of high-speed internet and Youtube though, I have definitely become more addicted to the computer, which is good in some ways, but not in others. It's a good resource, but I have to be careful not to let my real life get sucked up by a virtual world

I definitely know how you feel though. I never used to log out on my laptop. But then I began to notice that my older sister would sneak on it when I wasn't home, and she would save all of this stuff, and when I came across it later, I was like "Where did all this junk come from??" If only some people would respect privacy..

Very nicely put: "Since the advent of high-speed internet and Youtube though, I have definitely become more addicted to the computer, which is good in some ways, but not in others. It's a good resource, but I have to be careful not to let my real life get sucked up by a virtual world"
I agree!

I don't think they'd do anything that bad but it's kinda nice having a separate world from them that's all mind.

Exactly. Like with all these profile sites.. myspace, facebook, even here I guess.. sometimes I just want to keep family separate from friends, you know? It's kind of like having a written record of all your conversations with your friends put on public display for your parents or siblings to see.. which is just odd to me. It's weird how people can just read up on each other now. It kind of freaks me out. Not that I have anything to hide, hah, but it's just different talking to friends in comparison to talking with family. Or it is for me at least. It feels weird when the two worlds collide.

wow, once again this really sums it up completely for me.

Like you said, I don't really have anything to hide, it's just kinda nice to keep friends and family separate most of the time.

I don't quite like the idea that everyone can see what i say to people either. I use notes with some people to avoid this.

there's a Charlie The Unicorn video that talks about the interwebz and real-life colliding. I'm too lazy to find the link but I'm sure it's somewhere on Filmcow's video profile. I remember it's got Rick Astley in it as well. Some scary shit for sure!

Hmmm, I'll have to see if I can find that video and check it out! Sounds really interesting. Do you think if I type 'Charlie the Unicorn' (not sure who that is...) into Youtube, it'll come up with it?

Yeah, sometimes I'm half tempted to just completely hide all comments, etc. on my facebook profile, and just type something like "If you wanna talk, send me a message", haha. But then people seem to think I'm anti-social for some reason, just because I prefer not to have a lot of my conversations on public display. It's odd. Sometimes it just seems like a popularity contest. I think it's actually made some people a lot more vain in ways.

I sound kind of crabby, haha. I of course do enjoy it sometimes too. Profile sites have their good and bad qualities, as with anything. It just kind of feels like baggage to manage them all sometimes.
