Description
This is a Christmas commission I've been working on for the past week or two. A man from Canada wrote me an e-mail on my website asking me if I could draw a portrait of his wife, Susan. I have to say that I was a little intimidated by all of the blonde hair. But it actually wasn't too bad. The background was made with 3B graphite and blended. I did multiple layers to achieve the darkness. All in all I am pretty happy with the way this drawing turned out and I know my customer is as well. I've been sending him all of the updates that I have posted on DA and he seemed pretty excited about everything. One more drawing down...on to the next.14"x20" Fabriano Hotpress
3B, B, H pencils
blending stumps and tissue blending for the background

Very nicely done Brian, I love the softness of it, it gives it a romantic dreamy look.
Her left hand/wrist looks a tiny bit flat somehow, compared to the great depth of the rest of the portrait, a touch of highlight might make a difference perhaps. Nevertheless it is still a very beautiful portrait.

I think this came out beautifully...the reflections in her eyes and the hair looks great. But what I really think makes this piece what it is is the soft shading beneath the cheek bones. Incredible work...you make me envy you.

Thank you Steve. Hey thank you for the info on the tattoo also, I never got a chance to thank you for that. I am going to do that drawing next. I will have a line drawing and a detailed one for the tattoo artist to follow.

This is great Brian!!!
There's something about it thats very different to your other pieces... I think your style is maturing, and at a fast rate as well.
Again- the work you did on the eyes takes my breath away! and the lighting is amazing! how big was the ref. pic you drew from?

Thanks alot. Yeah I know my gallery isn't very consistent. I am constantly trying new things. The reference picture was digital so I could make it any size I wanted while I was working. It was pretty small though.

Thanks alot. I tried to add the background as I was working so that it wouldn't get too messy. My desk was pretty dark a couple times throughout this drawing though and I had to clean it

That is amazing! I love the light, and her expression.
Dirty question, how much do you take for comission work? I've been asked to make 3 but not sure if I'm charging right

golfiscool In reply to AnjoDoDesespero [2006-12-06 02:07:30 +0000 UTC]
Thank you. I made $300 on this one but I know I am charging too low. I am going to bump up my prices.

AnjoDoDesespero In reply to golfiscool [2006-12-06 08:48:31 +0000 UTC]
I've been charging something like 50 Euro max. (close to 65 US dollars I think) And thought it was too high, and only cause my mom doesn't let me charge less
But then again, I'm not sure a drawing of mine would be worth such amount, I don't have any big expenses, so it's ok to keep them cheap I think. Guess I really don't know how to make a price.

golfiscool In reply to AnjoDoDesespero [2006-12-06 17:08:21 +0000 UTC]
Oh, God, charge more than that!!!!! Your work is great, don't settle for $65. You have a skill that most people don't have. Most people that are specialized with a skill make a decent wage. Please raise your prices, you deserve alot more than what you are getting!!
