prize art! 8D/ This one is for , our first-place winner!I was originally supposed to draw Xue and croco!Alex in both Child and Perfect form being all cool, but then I got this idea, and asked if it'd be OK if human!Alex was also around.
After all the awful things that happened to these two during the last two rounds of DXT2, I wanted to draw them being all happy and peaceful. Sleeping in some meadow. They deserve to be happy, darnit!
Don't think too hard about WHEN this picture would happen in the timeline since it's pretty much impossible for there to be three Alexs around anyway. I think they're in a dream. But whose dream is it..? Hmmm...
I was total shipper trash for these two during DXT2, please forgive me.
ANYWAY! I hope you like this Cupil, and I hope that after DXT2 Xue and Alex get to be at peace again, even for a while.

This made me do many a jubilant cheers the moment I saw it, and the feeling still ripples to this day. It's just, just so goshdarn sweet and cute, and overall heartwarming. I love the sense of calm and relax here with all the characters leaning on each other, even if three or so are technically the same exact person XD it's genuinely comforting. I guess there might be some blending in what with the similar colors(understandable since it's 3 alex's she obviously has overlapping color schemes.) But I think everyone 'pops out', with their individual expressions and poses, and how well they compliment each other. A nice cozy harmony. Love all of these closed eyes, it's adorable.Β
I swear that I never really intended/planned on the two to be some kind of couple, but here I am--OTL in shipper hell..For my own characters. But if other people like the couple then that makes me feel better/reassured with the direction I ended up taking them. I love how Xue and human!Alexis are explicitly back-to back, it can almost be seen as symbolic or reflective of how close they've come in general(and not just in a romantic way heh heh ) For once in a long time they have some space to relax, and be at peace. Almost makes one want to go 'yess, you kids get some rest--you earned/deserve it.'
The coloring is great, the color choices match the characters quite well, and I just adore the signs and evidence of which way a marker or pen was moved around to get their respective effects. Like those tiny dabs in the background that reflect blades of grass being blown away by the wind, the long, focused strokes that make up the smooth surfaces. The horizontal streaks in the sky that are suggestive of thinly drifting clouds. I like the mostly bright pallet, I think helps push the aforementioned 'happy' feeling of the piece. The shading is well done, getting a good grasp of darker shadows, highlights, and the midtones in-between.Β
I guess you were trying to keep things simple with some sky, and some grass for these guys to relax in. But I gotta say it was a great choice of setting, whether or not there's a deeper meaning behind the choice. There's something nostalgic, and serene about big open grass fields. Whether it's just running around, or playing something that requires a lot of space. There's this connotation of simpler, happier times. It re-enforces this sense of safety, like there's nothing that can spoil this moment. Even if it maybe completely imaginary and/or only temporary.
Hell, even Baryonyxmon is looking over her shoulder like she really wants to savor this peace: she's safe, he's safe that's all that matters. I can't help but feel like Xue is probably snoring judging from his open mouth XD. Between leaning back, letting his mouth hang open, and letting DemiLeviamon use his lap as a bed;Β he's exhausted, and just letting his body and mind get the rest they deserve.Β Β But not in a miserable 'I can't go on much longer, so I'll just flop onto whatever surface and sleep' kind of way. Xue's displaying a deeper happiness here I feel, more genuine than the somewhat nervous smile he gaveΒ CriamonX5 , even if he isn't overtly smiling here. Alex? That smile is both heartwarming and breaking at the same time ;w;. Her body language is arguably more 'tense' than Xue's, what with the crossed arms, and the way her legs are bent to provide space for her superevo's tail. But she usually sleeps on her stomach(so her mantle or back scales/spikes can protect her), and it's not like those arms are tightly grasped around her torso, just resting on her legs. So even if she isn't flopped around like her Rookie form, or even Xue, she's still relatively laid-back here. I see this as her being more open, and accepting of her 'monsterous' forms. Through friendship and love she has found strength, and this brings a genuine smile to her face. Even if the tranquility of this moment is not everlasting.Β

I think you found a lot of the things I intended from here, and even some I hadn't even thought about, but ones that are totally fitting. .w.
I definitely wanted to give these guys a chance to rest peacefully, even for a while, because they've been through so much.
Also it's interesting you remembered the DXT1 piece I did! It definitely crossed my mind as well. I think even if Xue and Criamon are partners, and definitely close, somehow Xue and Alex's relationship seemed closer to me, or at least on differnt level than Xue and Criamon's. Plus, Criamon X5 is pretty creepy, even when Criamon is in charge. ;w;
One thing I want to mention is that what I was going for with human!Alex's pose was also the fact that even if she is relaxed, she's kinda more alert than Xue, and back to back with him - kind of in a way that she wants to protect Xue now as well, and not just herself. I think.

Ah! YES! That's it! Considering she tends to be the protective one, sort of 'defender' like her name's meaning, this fits perfectly. I think Baryonyxmon's serene gaze also reinforces what you said, since she's alex too. Watching over this peace with a desire to protect it.--haaa sorry if that sounded corny XD.Β

To each their own! I prefer working with traditional art over digital, but both certainly have things the other can't do. I have huge respect for any digital artists because most I can do with that medium is use a bit of Photoshop and MS Paint.
