i hadn't seen one before this year either. the thing is, we foal so early in the year that it's COLD so they have to wear them outside the barn to keep from getting sick.

well, ours are actually born from mid-winter until early spring. racehorses. lol.

i'm guessing thats a normal time for normal horses...?

that depends on where you are. normal horses foal in late spring and early summer. we have to induce heat in our mares to get them to foal so early in the year. in the southern hemisphere things are switched of course, but it's the same season, just a different month.

it's my job, so i'd hope i know a little bit about it. i imagine in Texas you'd have a longer breeding season because the weather stays fairly warm year round, so a foal that is born in the "winter" isn't in as much danger of getting sick, etc.

hahha hell yeah it's fairly warm all year round...it was 80 degrees on christmas day..

she's actually a VERY small filly, our smallest foal so far. her mom is a small mare so you can get a general idea of how TINY she really is.

no, she's absolutely fine, just small. she was actually born after her due date so she's not a preemie. she's growing like a weed and is probably the most energetic foal we have.
