There are so many amazing aspects to this photo--the crop, the focus, the way the flying dirt emphasizes the movement ...all combined into one amazing shot.
Like another commenter, I initially found the nose a bit distracting, but I agree something would be a bit off if it were cropped out somehow. As someone not as familiar with horses, including the nose allows me to mentally draw the rest of the horse to get a more complete picture.

Wow, BEAUTIFUL shot! I love the little pink boot sticking out there. You got the horse and the ground, and when you're riding that's all you're really thinking about. Man...now I want to go ride. Again, this is amazing!!

I love how you framed and composed this. Having the galloping feet with the kicked up sand is good, but the horse's nose makes it great!

Fantastic crop. I love the focus on the horse's legs, the very foundation for all its speed and power. I also like how you caught the horse as it was going around a barrel. Excellent.

I'm not really into barrel racing, but I love this picture. It is an unusual leg position for a pic of a barrel horse, so it made it much more interesting. Just a suggestion, next time leave out the nose next time. Good job other than that.

i have to say i respectfully disagree. the nose allows for extra space to the left of the legs... which gives the horse a place to go, so to speak. cropping it differently would lead to an unnaturally cramped composition. cropping lower eliminates the detail of the tack on the horse's chest. also... the nose indicates that the horse is running with his head low and relaxed.... not strung out like a giraffe, which you sometimes see in high speed events. i appreciate the critique.

oh, i didn't mean that you should crop it. i just would have liked to see either a little more of the head or none at all. that's all. sorry if i offended you.

o no! i'm not offended at all. i really do appreciate constructive input like the kind you gave me. i was debating whether or not to leave the nose in, and the fact that you said something means i wasn't crazy for doubting it. leaving more of the head in the photo may have worked nicely. i just thought i'd explain why i left the nose in the shot instead of getting rid of it when i thought it was slightly distracting.
