Description Rawrgh! This is the partial skull monster thingy fursuit I made for Califur.

It includes a tail but this picture doesn't include my booteh. 3:

I made the fingers of my handpaws just conical cuts of faux fur so they resemble Grinch hands. I looooove claws and pawpads but I knew these kinds of paws would make it easier for me to dance, and I lurve dancing! :'3

Aaskdjalsjf

PLEASE post some pictures of your mask in progress! I would love to see how you made it... That is just too darn cool.

I wish that I weren't so frugal with my money so I would actually spend it on costume supplies that would make my work look good... I'm getting frustrated with using toilet paper and liquid latex all the time. XDD

I appreciate it a lot! :3 <3 WIP pics coming soon!

And trust me, I use a lot of cheap materials for my base. The mask itself, a very low amount of money. As for the furred head and paws and tail... I spent around $100 on good fake fur but I have enough left after this to make several more partials if I wanted.

I am totally a budget builder, and lately I've been building fast too. This skullbeast partial... a week and a half on the head. Maybe a few days less. The paws and tail, both done in just one evening. A sleepless evening 'till around 7:00am, but still one evening. xD

You've probably told me the kinds of material you use... and I've since forgotten. Except wall spackle. XD I remember you saying that you use wall spackle. XD Did you use one of those opera masks as a base for your skullbeast? That's a good idea and I might really have to start getting into that. (I attempted to make a mask base out of duct tape for my werewolf... It didn't work once I started building onto it. Got all scrunched and doesn't fit my face now.)

Sheesh, that is fast. If I could make a monster head in less than two weeks, I'd be set for life. XD

GOOLWORX In reply to InstilledPhear [2012-06-27 05:22:08 +0000 UTC]

I did, and cut across the face so I can do the jaw separately. But be sure that the opera mask is comfy on your face before you build on it. And add foam padding where it's needed. I have a more prominent nose bridge than the opera mask does, so after wearing the mask for literally 12+ hours a day for three days straight at a convention I began to scar on my bridge because of the plastic constantly pressing against me.

On this I used a little paper mache to strengthen the base which consisted of two halves of a water bottle attached to two halves of the opera mask (lower and upper jaw). I made polymer clay teeth with long bases that I could stick into the 'gums' of the mask. Then I built over it with four bags of Crayola Model Magic. That stuff is AWESOME. It's like lightweight clay and it dries into a durable squishy foamy and it's awesoooome. I pushed the teeth in there, waited for it to dry, glued around the edges of where the teeth were attached, painted it, put mod podge and krylon spray over it, and yey! A mask. Oh also I epoxy glued black elastic straps on the inside to make my moving jaw(I don't recommend this- make a hinge jaw instead!). I reinforced the back and made it as comfortable as possible by epoxy glueing and hot glueing pieces of sheet foam before I measured the generic male head armature I have and made a fur hood for the mask. I'm glad that head armature has roughly the same dimensions as my head. :3

I have a tiny head, so a generic opera mask is sometimes too big. >.> I don't have to worry much about padding, but I did need to trim down the forehead of my mask base for the werewolf.

So your whole Skullbeast mask is made of that Crayola stuff, then? Man, I hope it's cheap. XD Lightweight is good, though--I might look into that stuff for the gargoyle that I want to create in the future. I love the use of the water bottle, too... I'd never have thought of that! Or maybe I would have. I dunno. I use some pretty odd stuff when I make costumes. XD I guess scrounging is what we budget artists need to do, eh?

I really should post a WIP of my werewolf mask. I think you'd like him! I accidentally made him cute and fluffy, but hopefully the teeth will make up for that.

Crayola Model Magic is cheap enough for the likes of us, and it's definitely a good enough material for a costume. So yus experimenting with it is a great idea! :3 Plus it dries fairly fast compared to liquid latex.

POST DEM PICS PLEASE. :'3 Wannasee wannaseee! Also here's WIP's of my skullbeast stuff... but I think I was too self-conscious to take pix at an earlier stage of mask development 3':

Then make it! :3 Hit up some tutorials! Sintra plastic is good for making robots/armor/gear, and some sign-making companies may give you their sintra scraps after they cut plastic signs. And the scraps are surprisingly large! Sintra plastic can be cut, heated in boiling water and shaped to what you want, dried, and painted!
