Description

My latest vector fanart from "Night In The Woods", quite possibly the greatest video game I have ever played.

The scene shown here is from the middle of the game, where Mae Borrowski leaves the confines of Possum Springs to attend a underground punk party, where for the first time she dances, parties, and meets a girl. It's the first time where Mae truly discovers herself. The character of Bombshell, (The bear), is only in the game for a brief few moments, yet remains as one of the most memorable characters in the game.

Night In The Woods has truly made its mark with the Furry community, and while the game features anthro animals, I think the loves from this game comes from a bit more. There's a lot of indie games with anthro animals, so why did this one make the splash? This scene in particular reminds me so much of the furry community. I can't place my finger on one thing on one particular, but there's something so special about entering the underground rave, meeting a punk girl wearing a bandana through a pentagram handshake, and dancing to some synth wave that really matches the actual anthro community. Maybe I'm just overthinking it, but NITW's approach to counter-culture might be a big reason to as why it struck such a chord with this community.

I applied a purple gradient to the two characters, so I've included a transparent version without the purple glow. Ever wanted to quickly photoshop Mae Borrowski and her newfound love in Rome? Now you can! Also attached is the original Ink sketch. I hand-draw all my work, ink it, scan it, and then digitally trace and color the entire thing with vectors. It's some legwork, but its worth it to get the vector style that NITW gets so right

How does vector art exactly work

Vector artwork consistes of using waves lines with what the programs dub a "pen tool". But it isn't really like a pen. Instead of drawing with a mouse or pen, you're dragging smooth lines. How far you move the mouse determines the direction, and by double-clicking, you reverse the direction. It's weird at first, you really have to get the hang of reversing direction and getting the right distance and length of each line if you want smooth curves and not just a perfectly rectangular drawing. It also really only works for tracing. You're welcome to attempt to draw using a pen tool, but it's weird! I draw all my work with hand, photograph it, then begin the tracing process. I use Gravit for my art, as it's much more simple than say, Inkscape or Illustrator (those have a very high learning curve.) Also, Gravit is free! If you want some NITW-looking smooth artwork, I'd play around with Gravit and see what you can come up with. Keep in mind that it takes time. I started making Vectors in late 2016, and only recently have I managed to consistently churn out full digital artwork.

Night in the Woods is definitely in my top favorites. I'm also a huge fan of Sally Face and Fran Bow, some other really well done indie games
