Description
Another creature from a dream. It was the end of autumn and I was exploring some dry cross timbers woods off the beaten path. I found a slow-moving stream rich with life and this one I remember most vividly. Somewhat inexplicable, I have no idea what group of animals it would belong to, but I've assumed it to be an amphibian of some kind that lost its legs, similar to a siren or caecilian, mostly because it felt like it had a corrugated body and was covered in mucus. It had a very tiny, pointy mouth with a strong jaw, a bit like a seahorse mixed with a softshell turtle. The tassels reminded me significantly of those found on sculpins, wobbegongs, mossy frogs and mossy geckos, and the complex texture seemingly allowed it to attach itself to rocks and plants like velcro. The pattern was a lot more 'noisy' and visually complex than my rendering but I wanted to spend less than 30 minutes on the drawing. I found it mucking around half-submerged in sediment, sludge, and algae; I assume it hunts things like snails, small crustaceans, and tubifex, but it was also a surprisingly good swimmer and could writhe powerfully, but it was mostly calm after being caught. There was some kind of stone-brick examination tank past a set of overgrown concrete steps, something like a constructed pond or rectangular well that was covered in white, green and orange lichens, moss, and algae, in which I put this animal with two other aquatic animals, one being a young and eel-like lungfish and something else I don't remember. It swam around a bit more than the others, who weren't bothered by it. There were a couple other people around watching, who were seemingly just as impressed with the creature as I was, but I don't know what putting it in the well was about.
