Description
Finished this while waiting for Simcity to download, but of course Origin refuses to give me my product 2 hours after midnight... THANKS, OBAMA.Anyway, these guys are sort of like sand ninjas that have been training in the harshest environment in the known universe, making them the most deadly warriors on Arrakis. In the first three books, these guys wreck everything. Their Krys knives can't be sheathed once drawn unless they are coated with blood, and they don't leave their dead behind in order to preserve the water of their bodies. unadulterated bad-asses.
I figured that they would need protective sleeves for their arms and legs more than regular stillsuits- not for fight protection, but just from regular climbing and stumbling over rocks and sand and riding sandworms in their spare time since Fedaykin are so active. They wear inscribed clothing since they are raised in a very religious culture (much like muslim and christian warriors used to) as protection or blessing, and the round water counter-like jewelry. Fremen gotta 'frem yo.

Wonderful concept. The fully clad figure is menacing and badass at the same time just as you would imagine a guy who lives in harsh and unforgiving conditions.

Do you have that big character as an separate picture? It is very nice!
Nice picture!
I would like to ask, if you would give me a permission of using this picture in a fan made expansion to Dune card game?
If you do, what artist name do you prefer to use?Β
Like previous, I most likely would put some desert background to it, but I would sent a final version for your approval.

I'm on my 3rd re-read of the 1st three Dune books and then I stumbled upon this beautiful piece. I've loved Dune and the idea of the Fedaykin desert warrior has always been facinating to me. This is an excellent piece of work, I love it!

Finally someone who managed to get Fremen right!! You've captured the utilitarian aspect of the book, and the personalities perfectly. This is beyond amazing, it is exactly how I pictured them.

I really liked it ! It remembers the first books of Herbert... *sigh*
It's very impressive, the muslim / zensunni religious part is well rendered in your art. Maybe the krys is not like I imagined it.

Dude, very unique work, I think you found a niche, and it's fab.
They look like they have water built in their suits so they have a supply of it in hot desert environments.

I like how your stillsuit design is a quasi-armor kind of thing.Β Something I always felt like they would be.Β And like you said, not just for combat.Β The battle was against the planet as much as the Harkonnen.Β You really brought these guys to life straight out of the book. Great job!

I love the design, I may have had the arms a bit more unencumbered ( a bit too many belts and braces for knife fighting ) but I love your work.
I especially like the maker hooks

I loved your design so I posted it on reddit. [link]
Someone said this:
How many more stillsuits are we going to see before we get one that isn't covered with greeblies and tubing? It's ARRAKIS for crying out loud! Sand, dust, wind-borne particles! Herbert himself points out that machines do not last long in the desert because of sand and dust getting into everything. A stillsuit needs to be SMOOTH (or at least a single, flexible covering, like the one in the Dune Encyclopedia) No, it doesn't look as interesting, but it's a hell of a lot more practical.
Do you have anything to say to that?

Gorrem In reply to invalids [2013-03-20 07:17:28 +0000 UTC]
IE: The Stillsuits are essentially life support systems for the dying. They are not free.

Gorrem In reply to invalids [2013-03-20 07:05:49 +0000 UTC]
Lol. Oh boy. Thanks for sharing my work though.
He said it himself, it doesn't look as interesting. I don't think I need to argue about the practicality of people living on a desert planet inhabited by giant sandworms that produce mind-altering space heroin. I'm pretty sure cacti and horny toads get along fine in the desert without being smooth. Also, Imagiscience tells me anything is possible.
And why do people always design them with tubing? It's not just because they think that's how the suits work... the image of a man, covered in what resembles exposed muscle and veins, is a strong image. They rely on the suits to survive, otherwise they will perish. The Fremen are a race on the brink of death, they are fragile and soon to become extinct in their old ways. They are the walking dead, and the suits are a visual metaphor for this.

Thank you for your prompt, thorough, and thoughtful response! I seriously love this answer. I think I just found my new major: Imagiscience. Great example with the toads and cacti. And I like the thought process behind the tubing: "they are the walking dead, and the suits are a visual metaphor for this." Do you mind if I quote you in a response to that comment? I promise I won't bother you with further updates (especially if they insist on being over-analytical, lol.)

Gorrem In reply to invalids [2013-03-20 14:19:40 +0000 UTC]
Haha, go ahead. I would be getting ahead of myself to say this is exactly what Frank Herbert was thinking, but it seems to me that the idea that the Fremen represent is "the preservation of the old ways." By the time of the God Emperor's death, their culture has been completely outdated and their descendants are shadows of the past, relics. Only some of their traditions remain as vestigial homage, which is all they had to begin with. "Life support systems" is definitely the theme I was going with. My two cents!
