Description
wow, uber color loss from that jpeg compression. Whatever.Anyway, another character from Character Creation class. We had to base a character on an aesthetic of another culture besides our own, so I chose Maori and Haida to portray this guardian spirit thing. It's kind of a cross between an owl, a whale and a bear.

Awesome, hun. Being from NZ I can really see the Maori influence. Got the Tiki face and the Kowhaiwhai (pronounced "Ko-Fie-Fie" as "Wh" is pronounced as a "F") designs on the body. Great to see you appreciating Maori designs Poor lil New Zealand needs more loving!

I can see it, like, uncurling itself to attack something.
or guard something.

If you save an image as a Bitmap, then it will retain its original coloring... I recommend pasting it into paint and saving it as a 24-bit Bitmap.

That's awesome. Those patterns make it real confusing and almost spiritual in itself. It looks like a cross between maori and the US pacific northwest tribal aesthetic. Dunno the names, thereof.

Thanks for commenting on my work,
It's impressive that you nailed both of my inspirations! The northwest tribe its taken from is called Haeda. In fact, the assignment for this character was to take the aesthetic of two cultures and combine them in a character.

Whoa. This is utterly awesome. o_o It's weird, but weird is always awesome. He's very full of form, and the shadows on his body make him look like a thick wood carving. ^__^ I love the details of the pattern too. *definite favorite*

Cool, I don't know much about Haida but the maori part is pretty visible in the face & the black & red. It's a good concept, it fits the look & feel of a guardian nicely

the Haida (well, all Northwestern Native American art, really) has always fascinated me. This is nifty.
for some reason it looks vaguely cuddly.
