Bernard: You have doomed this world to Hell, Assassin. The ills of Earth shall flourish, and the very planet rots... All at your hand.Altaïr : You would do well to focus on the world beyond this one.

The Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem was an order of chivalry originally founded at a leper hospital in 1098 by the crusaders of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. It was established to treat leprosy, its knights originally being lepers themselves. Compared to the Teutonic Knights, the Lazarites are a senior Order, but it's one of the less-known and less-documented orders. The Lazarites and the Hospitallers, of the Order of St. John, were brother organizations, though the Lazarites took orders from the Templars in the field.
Since lepers cannot feel pain, they were renowned as fearless warriors, fighting even when others might have succumbed to the feeling of their wounds. However, they were also exceedingly reckless, and could most certainly be killed on the field of battle.
Around the time of the Third Crusade, the Templars began searching for the Apple of Eden so they could take over the world (OF COURSE!) As the Pieces of Eden were what gave the ancient prophets their powers, the Lazarites sought it specifically to cure their leprosy, as Jesus did during his ministry. The Grand Master, Bernard de Montclar, was assassinated by Altaïr ibn-La'Ahad in the Leper Colony outside of Acre. He was succeeded by his brother, Gerald.
After the fall of Acre, the Order fled to France in 1291, and whilst the Templars were being purged by the Assassin King Philip IV, the Lazarites were able to get into his good graces, and eventually recruited many of the Royal House of France into their ranks, and influenced the events leading up to the French Revolution, when the Lazarite Grand Master, King Louis XVI was executed. They regained control of France after Napoleon's reign, until the July Revolution.
Whilst its original aim, to cure leprosy, has been accomplished in Europe (and with no Apple, mind you) the disease persists in underdeveloped regions of the world, such as Africa and Latin America. They still seek the Pieces of Eden...

Very nice to see some love for the Knights of st. Lazarus, although the description is....well, considering it's Assassin's Creed it's obviously very wrong. But good art nonetheless !

Ah Frigg, I totally forgot add a link to the redrawn version! It's a bit more accurate, in more ways than one (anatomically, historically, hopefully...) Regardless, thanks for the comment, and take a look if you're interested: thasiloron.deviantart.com/art/…

Come to think of it, the kings of France were the last to practice the Royal Touch to cure Scrofula.

Scrofula isn't contagious, is it? How convenient!
(Unrelated note: I now have the image of Louis XVI trying to heal Marat by repeatedly poking him. Wrong disease, of course, but still...)

"Stop poking me, sire."
"Oooh, but it's for your own good, M. Marat ...~"
"No, seriously, stop."
"Nope."
"You are vermin! A parasite on the body of the nation!"
"Now, be nice."
"Stop poking me!"
"I'm curing you!"
"OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!"
