Description
Here's my quaint little map of an Mid-Atlantic Ridge that rose above the waves, colored using the Köppen climate classification as a key. Now, some comments on the sea currents and the climates of North America and "Atlantys":
- On the far south of the continent (which we will call the island of Benguela), the bit of desert and semi-arid lands are a result of the Benguela Current bringing dry air to the region, creating an arid climate while the waters on the western coast of the island are rich in marine life due to the rich waters of the current, being a breeding ground for various marine mammals like whales. The vegetation of this region, separated from the wetter side of the island by a north-south mountain chain, is very similar to the Brazilian Caatinga, meaning that while semi-arid, there are some two months in the year were the entire region blooms green when rains come from the Amazon
- As the Gulf Stream goes a long way north to make its U-turn, Newfoundland, Labrador, Greenland and Iceland have an warmer climate in result of that, with Greenland and Baffin Island having large portions of its coasts covered by boreal forests (while Iceland is much more made of them), while in continental North America the continental climate goes more north over Newfoundland and eastern Labrador, while much of the peninsula itself is covered by boreal forests
- Much of the southern tip of the major island of the continent is covered by semi-arid lands or deserts, as it is affected by the Hadley Cell of the North Atlantic, and while the western side is affected by humidity coming from the Caribbean , it is just out of reach for the Gulf Stream, causing the entire region to be mostly semi-arid going to mediterranean
- About the climates of northern Atlantys, they are a strange thing in some places, as in the west coast the warmth of the Gulf Stream brings much of the region around the latitude of Gibraltar to a Semi-Tropical climate going then to Oceanic.
- Then, when the Stream makes its U-turn, it brings much humidity to the other side, reason why both side of the continent are covered mostly by boreal, oceanic and continental climates.
- Finishing it up, as we go more to the south, the climate becomes mediterranean as it becomes drier and hotter, although a good chunk of it is made of the warm-summer of even cold-summer varieties
Also, thanks to Ashtagon , since their maps of the world's altitudes and bathymetry served as the basis for this map
