I find this to be really creepy but really cool at the same time. The shape of the bones really made me think that they were real for a second, even if the coloration was off.
I've gotta hand it to you-- your dedication to your craft is truly remarkable. How long did it take you to make all these bones? I bet you learned a lot about anatomy while making them.

They were carved from wood (notice the wood-grain in the downloaded image)
Pine to be specific.
I had two very good anatomy books to use as references.
The fingertips were sculpted from green epoxy putty.
The scapula bones and pelvis were sculpted from bondo car frame filler putty on aluminum screen mesh.
The "ribs" are wire.
As for the trolls...
I like to think of them as as "The 'Special' Kids of deviantArt"

What kind of wood did you use? No, I'm not grilling you, I'm just curious. Did you have a guide on making the joints, or just rely on your own experience woodworking?

I should be horrified. Instead I find myself mesmerised by the craftsmanship. You're one skilled potential serial killer comrade! Seriously though you've dealt with the negative comments with a very easy going attitude, and even though it personally seems strange to me I can't ignore the work that must have gone into this.

Why would anyone need that much detail in the skeleton. And if you really needed a skeleton base. Why not use those scientific skeleton replicas.
Seriously though, this is creepy.

Gradendine In reply to amigobear [2011-12-15 02:38:46 +0000 UTC]
Because most surfaces have importance for articulation. I had to learn which ones wouldn't need so much detail.
After I was done, I thought about the medical replica, and to be honest, it would have saved me a lot of time and trouble (cuts/scrapes to my hands. A dremmel is a lot better for shaping wood than a carving knife. Belt sander FTW!)
As far as the "creepy" part, everyone has their way of looking at things. I'd be a little concerned if everyone thought my work was cool.

I don't plan on murdering her. Maybe fingering her into a series of orgasms that feel like a near-death experience, but not murder.
I think I'll do that fingering thing tonight.
Sleep well, lonely little girl.

You *do* have a good point there, lil' Kim.
MTV has been a nasty crap-stain on the tapestry of human history. Just make sure you don't forget about MTV2 (crap!) and any other incarnation they pull out of their hinder-sections.
You seem to have your stuff together better than people give you credit for.

The structure looks so much like a human skeleton and like I said, even stained like a human skeleton!!!!! These " Wooden" bones are so REAL it is HARD TO BELIEVE you made them so LIFELIKE.......im so scared............

1.) They're burnished to prevent deterioration.
2.) I'm very good at carving wood.
3.) Last I checked human ribs were not made of wire.
4.) You're special.
5a.) Those don't look like bone stains.
5b.) Unless you're colorblind.

I didn't want any discrepancies in the design, so at the time, for the prototype... yes.
Now that I have an even better understanding of human anatomy, I know what I can get away with in omitting details. If I had not made the prototype as accurate as possible, I would still be ironing out details for additional production prototypes.
P.S.
Elves are a bit too effeminate for the heat of battle.
Dwarven folk are a bit slow-moving on foot.
Dragons are quite effective at setting an entire battlefield ablaze in one belch, then flying off to raid a few defenseless cities.
Methinks I'll go with the dragons.

Production prototypes? So this wasn't just a one-off creation? Now I'm curious just what you plan on making these for. I've seen pics of this project posted elsewhere, and, as one might expect, there are some folks out there who suspect this little doll of yours was meant for sexual purposes... but one doesn't build something this complex just to stick their dick in it. There's gotta be more to it.
So what do you plan on doing with Sally here, and any future similarly-built figures?
And while I agree with you about the elves and dragons (even though it makes one wonder why the latter are so few, if they are supposedly so successful), I'm in a generous mood and won't drag out this remark to bash you on the inaccuracy of your dwarven comments.

They'll be for whatever the buyer wants them for. It could be for a store display, a cuddle-buddy, a physical representation of their fursona's S/O, or for "other" purposes.
Heck, if somebody really wants an anatomically correct 4' plush of Mrs. Brisby, and are willing to pay for all the premium components, I won't say "no".
I probably won't be bragging about it much, but hey, to each their own.
As for Sally, I plan on completing her as
1.) my first display model.
2.) Believe it or not, very relaxing to hold.
3.) The morale boost of completing something
As for dwarves, I won't dispute their jewelry-making skills or fine taste in gems/metals.
Elves have potential that they... just don't take advantage of.
And dragons... well, give one a table of fillet Mignon with a side (bed-stand sized) of cranberry sauce and you have, well, an addict of fine cuisine!

Ah, so Sally's sort of a proof-of-concept thing. S'cool, I can dig that. Good strategy - stuff like this, as you've said, can be complex and often pricey to pull off, so having something to show potential customers is important as evidence you know what you're doing and how to do it right.
And yeah, if you decide on making a business out of this, I wouldn't exactly put those sort of "custom modifications" on your site in display with other stuff - probably just some tucked-away fine print somewhere, if even that... odds are even if you don't mention it at all, someone's gonna ask, and you can hack out details then. But I doubt those sort of folks would be really big clients anyway - most are happy with pictures.
But yeah, I could definitely see them as a kind of companion/cuddle thing - I mean, Japan is big on huggable bodypillows with anime characters printed on them for just that sort of niche market - this isn't too dissimilar, from the sound of it.
Best of luck in the endeavor.
