Description 100 themes challenge picture 1: Introduction

I plan on revisiting this picture at a later date.

-------

Suns setting on the open ocean, which signals feeding time for most of the creatures under that water. The trio of creatures on the surface are divers- the male collects a group of females who catch their food and also his. The males are very territorial and will chase off any others of their kind if they get too close. They usually don't gather in groups larger than four or five unless they're raising young.

The floating masses are actually large predatory hosts for a variety of smaller plankton-like creatures which help to break down and digest whatever food is gathered with the "feet" on the end of the tentacles. It has two sets of eyes- a set of relatively simple eyes which is better at detecting electrical signatures from prey animals under the water and a set of more complex eyes above the water which can distinguish light, color and distance for keeping an eye on predators. They are indiscriminate eaters and will scavenge, hunt or browse on whatever connects to the "feet" that drift behind it.

The small fish-like creatures are similar to the divers on the surface- it's one male with many females and many offspring that travel in a school. One female is the dominant female. They eat a variety of small plankton-like creatures and detritus in addition to smaller fish-like creatures.

The largest fish-like creature uses a baleen filter to catch whatever happens to get sucked into its mouth.
