Thanks thats very kind of you
Everytime I try oils it ends up looking muddy how do I avoid that?

Start with the darks and paint them in thinly, don't use much paint then build on with lighter colours when you know they are right. You can thin them with a medium if you want which will dry faster and then they wont pick up as much as you go over them.
There is a demo in my scraps you can see how I do it.

Thanks the tutorial was very helpful
I've favourited it for when I try have a go.
Do you use turps or white spirit or anything like that to paint with?

No it can cause problems later with cracking so it's best to avoid it. If you have some No.1 medium or purified oil it is not needed.
The oil is slow drying the medium is faster.

The whole painting is in oils but I wanted it to look like a blackboard was done in chalk. She can be fierce when she wants.

Ah, it does look like writing on a wall, although the font reminded me more of graffiti on a wall than chalk on a blackboard. So i was wondering if you had used a different medium to write out the words, since there aren't many brushes out there that would lend themselves to this ease of writing

I used to be a signwriter and sign brushes are ideal for it, the hard part was doing it rough and not neat like I had been trained to do.

Oh wow! I just saw this at Hervey Bay Gallery!!! How awsome! This one was one of my favourites, (and also "Blood Sweat and Fears" which was painted in his own blood, a bit icky but I loved it as soon as i saw it.) Your painting is truly striking and demands attention. Your stepdaughter really stands out from the canvas like she is illuminated with a spotlight and separate from the background. You are so clever to have separated the two from eachother and also to be able to get the words to stand out as well. I love it. Much more dramatic in real life, the skin looks like skin! I'm so thrilled for you, congratulations.

Great, thanks for writing, I've had a few sightings from people around the country.
I have to pick it up next week, I haven't seen it for a year. Did you read it all she wrote it for me to do this painting, I will have to do a book with it.lol
Did you know it was on here when you were looking at it or have you only just found it.
I have just put my entry in for this year and should be told tomorrow if it has gotten in, I will let you know.

hi graeme,
yes i did read what she had written in the background of the painting, and had a chuckle at the end, it reminded me of when i was a teen. Now i have pre-teens who will be saying the same thing to me in time, i gather.
I was actually looking at my friend and i saw your avitar on her comments and recognised the painting straight away! I was so thrilled to see that you were here, especially so soon after seeing the real painting in the flesh.
Good luck with you latest submission. You should know by now if you got in, as it has been a while since you wrote your last comment.
Nice to meet you anyway, I shall add you to my list of friends.
