This is a portrait I painted of my stepdaughter for a very big Portrait prize in Australia The Moran Portrait Prize which was selected and will be hung on Tue. 13th March 2007 there were over 500 entries and only 30 get selected.Please visit my web site www.graemebalchin.com

The execution itself is breathtaking. Lovely idea and just.... wow. Beautiful work on her anatomy and hair, and especially the color tones.
(I also personally adore her outfit :3)

Everything i read in the background of the picture i am feeling right now, geeze i feel like such a part of a cliche, not that the picture is though, its amazing, really well conveyed.

It's fashion, every generation has it ( your eyes are looking at me ) the cliche, the talk, the reinventing of the world to each generation. It is so fantastic to hear all these comments that are totaly in tune with the message of the painting.

Lol yeah those eyes, they are a problem lol, they are the most focul point on the body i find so i love to paint them and have allways used them as a symbol of myself i guess
I guess it is though its hard because it really steals away your individuality you think, these are my feelings and no one elses but when you share them with a whole generation its hard to feel out of a stereotype, which infact also fits you into one, ahhh, the teenage years as they would say.
You never really know untill you grow out of them.

This is wonderful, the execution is brilliant, and the meaning, well, I'm 17, and it just seems like this can be totally taken out of the context it is in, and mean so much to so many people in different situations. And then I think that it can be taken from a broader perspective, in that teenagers are stereotyped, If we don't look geeky and smart, then we are incompetent fools who have no deeper thoughts...
Now I am just ranting on.. I'll stop now, but it is a wonderful peice.

Just ranting on, that is just what I asked Amy to do when I asked her to write the story in the background. You have hit it just right which is fantastic because it means I have captured it just right.
The name Perceptions of a Teenager is not what it seems, it is my perceptions of her, getting older, it is so easy to let an age gap come in but I am determind to not let that happen I look at her and am amazed at what she knows for her age but at the same time I know so much more and wish I could teach her but she must learn many things for herself.
I look at her and see she is just like me at that age, nothing has changed, maybe the whole human race is stereotyped. Now I'm ranting on but as a teenager you got it just right. Thanks for your thoughts

wow.. wish I had a dad that resembled you in any kind of way..
I know exactly where you are coming from, I actually feel rather the same way about my sister, she is only a few years younger than me, but just seeing her growing up, doing things she probably shouldn't, not doing the things she should. It kind of scares me... but at the same time gives me an insight into what my mum is going through... haha, sending her eldest off the the city all alone...
The one part of parenthood I would dread... letting them go.

It will be in the NSW state library I think it's called the Mitchell Library from the 14th or 15th for about six weeks then it will go on tour around Australia for about 12 months. We will be told the winner on the 13th at the opening presentation. First prize is $100,000

No worries mate, she is normaly blond but had just had her hair done but yah she looks just like this I have used her in a lot of paintings.
