Fooling around with Sean Kennedy's Discovery mesh.Jupiter map from JHT Planetary Pixel Emporium [link]
Monolith by me - hey even I can't mess up modelling simple 1:4:9 rectangle
Just exploring some ideas here the model needs some surfacing tweeks and the composition could do with a rethink. I caught the movie recently - one of the things that struck me was the harsh external lighting of the Discovery - Kubrick wasn't afraid to leave things in deep shadow. Will definitely put together some more 2001 renders, it is such a rich topic.

So Glad to see that You show TMA-2 as it looked in the novel. It WAS the Star Gate.

Yeah, I did notice that effect in the film, although because the models, camera and light weren't in a vacuum, the shadows aren't as dead-sharp as they would be in space. Still a great use of lighting, both in the film and this piece here...

Such a terrific movie. Even today, it still stands up as having some of the most realistic depictions of space travel ever to grace the big screen.

I've ordered a copy of 2010 on dvd -it's been about 15 years since I last saw it so can't really remember much of the details, except for the space walk across to the Discovery. I should get some idea's once I've watch the movie again

And yours is truer to the movie - and that's just fine! I liked yours quite a bit. Maybe it's because of your recent BSG work, where you had a dominant color cast, but when I tried to do the "What Would GrahamTG Do?" trick in my head, I saw the Discovery in blues. But maybe that was just the unconscious influence of Whelan's (neat!) 2010 cover creeping in
Drell-7 is playing with the idea of modeling several updates to that model.... but like most of it, his enthusiasm and ideas can often get ahead of his resources and time....
Well if you're gonna take another swing at Discovery, I'm psyched to see it!
