Description
Some quick fan art of the Pale Orc, Azog the Defiler, from "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." Such a cool baddie, I had to draw him. As of this moment (about a week after the movie's come out), there's almost no reference of him available on the internet, so I had to go off memory and a few tiny, blurry pics. Hopefully I didn't mess up that claw too bad. : P I may have to draw his awesome white warg at some point, too, and maybe sneak them both into my new art book: [link]Some of the book purists are annoyed that Azog's in the movie β The character exists in Tolkien lore, but his story was changed/expanded a bit so that the first film would have a more effective villain, ala Lurtz or Gothmog. I personally thought it worked great. While I love the books, I don't have a single problem with creative adjustments that make for a more solid and entertaining movie. And, c'mon, you need mini-bosses to keep the characters on their toes until they reach the big bosses. It's just good storytelling.
I loved the movie β I can't wait to see it again this weekend (and REALLY can't wait for film 2, Desolation of Smaug)!

Also, I heard that the second part of the Hobbit trilogy will have some insight on Gandalf's 'other business' driving the Necromancer out of Mirkwood, too.

Azog is an amazing baddie. I'm generally a book purist, but I loved how Jackson brought the characters more to life (I mean, I'm getting to know about some of the dwarves more than I did in Tolkien's book - this isn't an insult to him, but he mainly focused on Gandalf, Bilbo, and Thorin, and while that's fine, I would have liked more information on the others, that said, Bofur ftw).
The only thing I can see missing is the spike that goes through his arm. See, the claw isn't attached to his arm - it's part of a sharpened spike, and the spike has been RAMMED into his arm, just below the elbow, I think?
Yeah. Azog. He's hardcore.

I loved this movie so much and was inspired to search my Unfinished Tales to see what was from Tolkien and whatnot. Azog is mentioned as the slayer of ThrΓ³r and that he basically defiled his body as well. So, Azog the Defiler. Works for me! Love this.

I simply love the evil grin Azog seems to share so generously(it could almost match the Mouth of Sauron 
Despite his prothesis. Azog looks healthy, almost handsome for an orc. It makes me wonder why. Perhaps he's always been big and strong enough to claim an extra portion of meat or he might not even be raised by orcs at all... Whatever it is I bet his history is at least slightly different than other orcs'.

I have mixed feeling regarding Azog's insertion in the film though, while it seemed unnecessary I always like to see orc individuals getting the spotlight, after finally watching the film I thought he looked cool but his scenes (with the exception of the flashback) kind of bored me, I almost felt him shouting in my head "rawr! I'm filler!!"

This is really awesome, I thought he was pretty cool too. Not sure if his design was before or after Guillermo del Toro gave up on production (not sure of the story there) but his design looked very Pan's Labyrinth inspired. He was still really cool and I agree it made the orcs have more of a purpose. The movie was great too, recently finished reading the Hobbit and as we all know it doesn't line up 1 for 1 with the book... but that's not bad at all. I think this movie works well on many levels and really fits snug within the LOTR movie adaptations. Loved the Necromancer parts, can't wait to see more if, there will be any, in the next movies.

He also serves to help make the Dwarves more proactive, like most of the changes do. In the Book almost everything that happens happens TOO or AT the Dwarves, very little happens BECAUSE of them.

I really loved the movie especially the main antagonist for our hero's, but the CGI really started to bug towards the end. I mean practically mostly everything was done CGI the orcs, goblins, battles, etc.
I didn't mind the white ork being computerized it actually look quite epic when the first introduce him, but by the time they were being chased I was getting bored of trying to figure out who is hitting what. Luckily Azog came and saved the day by confronting the dwarven prince once more.
Loved the film, can't wait for the next one just hope they don't add too much CGI or else it'll remind me of the Star Wars prequels. (Not comparing them just analyzing how they created amazing costumes for Nazgul, orks, Goblins, and Uruk-Hai in the 3 films.)

What's really cool is that while The Desolation of Smaug is a year away, There and Back Again is only a year and a half away.
Great work as always, man. If you've ever seen Spartacus on STARS, you'd know that Manu Bennett was probably having a field day as Azog. I'd love to see the special features to find out how much was him in a costume and how much was CG embellishment.

Thanks, man! I've never actually seen Spartacus the TV show, it's been on my list of "need to watch" shows. But, yeah, I can't wait to see all the behind-the-scenes stuff for Hobbit when it hits Blu-ray (extended edition)!

Spartacus is a really good show. It's about as mature as it can get (violence, language, sex/nudity... the bare essentials) but the writing and acting are top-notch. Of course being a dramatization there are some liberties taken with regards to historical accuracy (I'm a history major, I know these things) but since the show is so well put together I can't complain.

Indeed.
Another good thing is that the final season starts in January. The reason why that's a good thing is because the show is ending according to the showrunners' original plan, not because some studio exec decided to punt it out of the lineup. That means that we the audience will get a conclusion that's been planned well in advance that ties up the loose ends in a satisfactory fashion (Sort of like the new BSG. Speaking of which, how awesome was Blood & Chrome? Can't wait for the unrated blu-ray in Feb.)
So that means you'll have 3 seasons of 10 episodes each plus a 6 episode prequel miniseries. More than enough to sink your teeth into, but not so much that you'll waste your life away trying to watch it all.

I actually haven't watched Blood & Chrome yet. I watched the 1st episode, then decided to hold off on the rest and just watch the whole thing when it hits Blu-ray.
