When I was separating from my wife of 11 years (a 15-year relationship) I imagined living underground in a remote room. The fantasy somehow helped me get to sleep at night...it comforted me to imagine solitude for the rest of my life. I didn't think I'd ever meet anyone again, and I always muttered "40 years" to myself as if counting down the time I'd be alone before I died. My underground habitation let me lie down and transport my imagination to various worlds where I could be happy.

I'd selected this location in Michigan's upper peninsula completely randomly, mostly for its relative isolation. 12 years later, the satellite view now shows development encroaching on the site.
