For as long as she could remember, Risa longed to be a Dragon Sitter. And not just any Dragon Sitter, but the greatest of all time. Her name would be spoken with awe and reverence for generations to come. Her dragon would be the smartest, the swiftest and the most beautiful ever. As soon as she could read, she consumed every scrap of dragon lore and husbandry that she could find, and constantly pestered the Sitters in her village to teach her even more.

And so it was that, when she reached her 11th year, she was presented with an egg to care for. For two months, the precious treasure never left her side. Then, on the day when the egg finally hatched…all of Risa’s dreams came crashing down around her. For what emerged from the egg was not a sleek and elegant dragon at all, but an awkward, clunky wyvern. And not just any wyvern, but a red, known for their stubbornness and limited intelligence. Risa was absolutely crestfallen. But when her parents reminded her that the newborn creature would surely perish without the care of a human Sitter, she grudgingly accepted her responsibility. She named her new charge Maruk, which meant “thick” in the language of her people; a reference to both his body and his intelligence.

As Maruk grew, Risa found that he was, indeed, a willful beast. He was not, however, unintelligent. In fact, he was remarkably clever for his species. Unfortunately, the combination of these two traits made Maruk infinitely more difficult for Risa to train, as he was more often than not given to acts of great mischief. But Risa was equally stubborn, and would not let the wyvern get the better of her.

When Maruk was not quite a year old, he came down with a fever not uncommon to young wyverns. It was almost always fatal. For almost four days, Risa tended to Maruk, going without sleep, and leaving his side only for brief moments to address her own bodily requirements. Finally, the fever broke. Maruk awoke, and the pair gazed into each other’s eyes. In that moment, a bond of love and loyalty was forged between the two that would remain steadfast and true until the end of their days.

Risa was often teased by the younger Dragon Sitters for being saddled with a wyvern, but she didn’t care. She knew that Maruk was unique among wyverns. People often underestimated Maruk’s abilities, simply because of what he was. They were always proven wrong, for Maruk, under Risa’s care and tutelage, mastered every task and skill required of him, routinely surpassing those of the dragons themselves.

Five years have passed since Maruk’s hatching, and both he and Risa are known far and wide. Dragon Sitters and scholars travel to their village from the world over to marvel at the exceptional wyvern and to consult Risa for her knowledge and experience. But for Risa, fame is no longer a desire, for her heart is filled with something infinitely more meaningful and fulfilling.

This was me once again putting together a bunch of new or fairly new resources. Risa is a Genesis 8 Female toon named Mafi who's incredibly adorable and a joy to work with. I just bought the Dragon Sitter outfit, and Mafi seemed like the perfect figure for it. The rest, as often happens, just fell into place. Maruk is a fairly old generation figure I picked up at a steep discount. Although he's not highly detailed and realistic, I think he's a good match for toon Mafi.
