Description On a whim I decided to dust off the old Nintendo 64 and boot up Lylat Wars (Star Fox 64 to some) on the weekend. Hours of nostalgic gaming ensued

Though it looks a tad dated now, it still holds up in terms of gameplay and it was remarkably ahead of it's time. I'd almost forgotten what an amazing marvel of engineering the Great Fox was and the imposing figure it cut.

So this is the dreadnought class flagship the Great Fox flanked by the Arwings of Star Fox. I'd always wanted to draw team Star Fox's spacecraft but somehow never gotten around to it!

I also added the Sector Z nebula as a homage to another awesome N64 game, the original Super Smash Bros. the Great Fox level was my second favourite, bettered only by Hyrule Castle..

great use of lilac in this pic btw. its cool how u used pen and pencil in different spots.
my fave bit is the glow the engines give off
nice job

Well I did try making the Great Fox as a gummi ship in KH1 (gave up pretty quick though )

Yeah I realised I have never been able to use colour to my advantage well compared to line, hence my love of drawing in pen now. But there are sometimes when pen will muddy it too much (like a bg) and then there's no substitute for pencils.

Heh the engine glow huh? That's my fave part too, and although I hate to admit it the glow was tweaked on photoshop the scan just couldn't do it justice.

But I def wanted the drive-glow to be a major star of this pic, so the extra tweaking is worth it. I still feel like it was cheating though...

I'm replaying KH1 atm. its the only game that wont crash my pc(and emulating a ps2 is pretty taxing, so that's weird)
yeah, some of the new scanners kinda enhance colour by themselves(they up the contrast or something), which sucks, coz my scanner always makes skin colour look really bad. and i cant find the old scanner.
also, i was thinking of taking pictures of my art instead of scanning it and seeing if it comes up well. gotta get a good camera tho.
yeh, its not cheating, i find that tiny details make stuff look better. like drawn pictures look better in the sun, than if you're looking at it inside.

I really like how you handled the colors, and didn't just make outer space just boring black. heh.

Heh thanks, well I figured space should be exciting and interesting! I did a test on another sheet of paper first and I gave up trying to add stars to a black backgroud - nothing worked

I ended up basing it on a screenshot from the opening of the N64 Super Smash Bros, with the Great Foz flying in a bluish black space bg. (stars still didn't work out though!)

awesome. big black boring background does not suit the action of starfox.

Wow. That is awesome.

I agree; the graphics in Starfox 64 may be dated now. But what matters more is the fun gameplay. And believe me, Starfox 64 was (and still is) loads of fun. It's a classic.

Thanks!

It's an amazing game, faced paced and polished. And not many games from '97 had full voice acting!

So true. Needless to say voice acting didn't become that active until somewhere in the early 2000s. But the fact that Starfox 64 had such highly developed voice acting for its time is one of the reasons why I can still taste its freshness even though its been more than a decade now since its release. This may sound crazy, but I still remember the day it first came out like it was only yesterday. Starfox 64 is without a doubt one of those games that has left me with quite a mark. It was a very revolutonary game from the time when 3D games started to take over. And I will probably carry this memory for as long as I live. Good times.

Shame that their newest game is a just a re-launch of this. I am looking forward to it, but still...

Yeah I would've liked to see a Star Fox on the Wii at least. But I'm really psyched for the 3DS re-release, can't wait to fly through Meteo in 3D! The somersault and u-turn should look awesome in 3D if done right.

I personally think it's about time Nintendo revisited it's N64 backlog and the 3DS seems like the perfect vehicle.

What about in VS mode, when lasers come at you. I wonder if they'll include the rumble feature as well as the cockpit-POV for it...

I know the feeling. And frankly, I'm a bit dissapointed in Nintendo for neglecting the SF franchise. Not to mention its been a few years now since Starfox Assault and Command. But I guess anything is better than nothing.
