Description The massive Blue Note and his little robotic sidekick, Baby Tank survey their favorite pool hall looking for any other hooligan who needs to be schooled in the ways of proper pool etiquette.

A commission for ~KidRaid featuring he and his wifes characters in one of their favorite activities from a few years back, playing pool... well, kinda.

This was definitely an interesting piece to tackle as, in the retuning, i had a lot of conflicted and chaotic ideas about what should go into it and how. Originally, the character of Blue Note (the big fella) was, according to ~KidRaid inspired by a Miles Davis album. I really wanted to work in a heavy jazzy blues feeling due to that, maybe play with my style some, but it seems that style is pretty well rooted in me.

I opted to go back to almost pure watercolor for this piece with the thought that I would use a lot more splashy color and improvisation to it, but, as you can see, that didn't really happen. I'm just too damned anal.

The bit of graffiti / mural in the right hand background was originally going to be more energetic, take up a bit more space and be way more jazzy feeling, but I lost my self in the details of the wall and the science of the space that it came out with a more urban graffiti feel to it.. not that it's bad in any way.

I really did miss the simplicity of just watercolor and the general look and feel of it as well as, no matter what my neurotic tendencies force in me, the fact that it's going to do it's own thing outside of my control. Unfortunately in this piece, it didn't do too much of that until the end as those are always some of my favorite parts.

The reflections and color in the floor was some of the last things I put in and those turned out to be some of my favorite parts... the splash of purple under the purple pool ball and the way it bleed out and then I antecedently smeared it... it just looks so cool. If I could only figure out a way to turn my brain off while working so i would allow my self to let things like that happen more oftine in my works and i would be a very happy camper.

I guess the war with my self shall continue in the next painting...

Medium: watercolor and india ink on 300lbs hot pressed watercolor paper.
