Description
This is a neon lamp. They were in use before the more familiar neon discharge tubes.I have been intending to photograph it for a long time and finally got round to it. It belonged to my father who used it as a darkroom lamp. I am not sure when it dates from but probably the 1930s or 40s.

If you are interested in them, here is a link to a website that I found that talks about them a bit: [link]

Fascinating! I don't recall ever seeing or hearing of this type of bulb. I followed your link & think the "flower" bulbs are a novelty that could still be popular.

Yes, I think they would still attract attention. There is a strange soft glow around the plates (almost like a cashmere jumper) that isn't like anything else that I am familiar with. It is not the same as the glow of something red hot.
I am thinking of taking another photo with it off for comparison, though it probably wouldn't be as interesting.
For a while there was a whole catalogue of strange specialised electrical components that seems to have been swept away with the advent of semiconductor electronics. I suppose that it is analogous to all those old garden and industrial tools that are now collectors items.

All it needs is some sharp businessman to notice them & think "!Novelty item!" & they'd be all the rage again.
