Before I describe this deviation, I just wanna wish you all a happy Friday the 13th!I will kill you all in your dreams...oh wait no, that's Freddy Krueger, my bad...
Nah, just kidding. Anyways, here's a rather imperfect and incomplete but still decent digital painting I started over a month ago of the Kýrdan goddess Valanbé, and the first time I've drawn this OC in over a year and a half! This is her new redesign, which I started like I said well over a month ago and almost finished, if it weren't for Mass Effect taking up most of my free time back in late-May/early-June 2012. Still gotta finish her and put on her finalized wings (these wings aren't her final design.)

A woodcarving I did of her back in Summer 2010, complete with a (somewhat-outdated) description of Vala's backstory. I highly recommend reading it if you're into fantasy, mythology and world-building.
Vala's old design from late-2010/early-2011 before I stopped drawing in an animu-influenced style and gave her a better, more regal and "celestial"-looking costume design, as more befits an angelic goddess.

Anyways, time to briefly describe Valanbé...
Description
Valanbé is the most important goddess to the Kýrdan religion, a monastic, polytheistic order of knight-monks founded thousands of years ago by the alien H'ruun species. Her name translates as "White Maiden" in the H'ruun language (although I admittedly guess that English-speaking Kýrdan knights referring to her as "Valanbé the White Maiden" is comically redundant, I still like the sound of it all together,) so needless to say, her costume and general color palette consists of lots and lots of white.
As an OC and mythological figure she was inspired by a number of different real-world pagan goddesses, notably Aphrodite and Athena (Greek mythology,) Freyja (Norse mythology) and Amaterasu (Shinto/Japanese mythology,) also drawing inspiration from some Christian mythological figures such as the Virgin Mary, and the Seraphim (six-winged, holiest angels.) She also draws influence from such fictional characters as Galadriel (Lord of the Rings,) Zelda, and Princess Celestia.
Anyways she is both a mother/fertility goddess and a war goddess...she is the goddess of such things as light, war, wisdom, love and several other things which aren't coming to me at the moment (I wrote it all down elsewhere, but don't have the document with me right now.) Appearance-wise she resembles a combination of a H'ruun woman and a Safhira woman...she took this form as her "default" after the Safhirim were created on the planet Akasha, so she can be worshiped as a goddess by both the H'ruun and the Safhirim. However, because she is a goddess she can appear to people in many forms...she has been known to appear as a swan, a white mare, a winged white unicorn, a ball of alternating gold-white and blue-white light, a beautiful woman with no wings and an appearance matching that of whatever species her worshiper is, and other forms.
Finally, she differs from other deities in the unusual way she is worshiped by the Kýrdan knights. Rather than trying to "appease" her through offerings and prayers, she is worshiped by the knights "protecting" her in battle, fighting the enemies of the Kýrdan in her name...this is a metaphorical version of how human knights in medieval Europe on Earth had a "lady" they would chivalrously protect during jousts and in battle. This chivalry is the same in the Kýrdan knights, only it's all in holy metaphor, and very deeply-ingrained in the Kýrdan way of life. Kýrdan knights are monastic and traditionally can't marry, instead they are all "married" platonically to Valanbé.

Dawwww thank you so much! Yeah I've said this many times before, but she was a real blast to draw. I am quite proud of her new costume, I think it fits a goddess a lot better than her old costume. And it's, dare I say, "sexier" too.
Eh, I wouldn't call my illustrations "pro" by any means, but I would say I'm definitely improving. I don't really draw to be perfect, I draw because I enjoy it and also to get ideas down on (digital) paper.
I may consider drawing Spotlight/Sekya next, since I remember ages ago you wanted to see another drawing of her, and she IS Vala's little sister. I also redesigned Sekya's backstory so she becomes an actual goddess, not just an angel-like character. Valanbe and Sekya are the primary goddesses of the Safhirim species from the planet Akasha...to them, they represent the sun and the moon, in that order. Kind of like Celestia and Luna, but different somewhat. I told you this before, but I'm finding that MLP is rubbing off on my original universe as far as influence goes. Confound those ponies!
And speaking of ponies, this is really hard to tell from this angle, if at all, but could you tell that the curls in Vala's hair were inspired somewhat by Rarity's mane?

Yeah I am definitely improving. Slowly, but still improving.
I doubt Lauren Faust stole my ideas since I don't even know her, but some of the similarities are just uncanny. And Spotlight's redesign I think you'll like. Her silver hair covers her right eye, and her hair also "flares" out in back now as well. She's still just as cute as before, her boobs are just as big as ever (lol,) and she still has the ability to make people drift off to sleep by singing. Funny how Vala and her remind me of two ponies each...Valanbe reminds me not just of Celestia but also Rarity, and Spotlight/Sekya reminds me of both Luna and Fluttershy.
And that's awesome that you COULD see the influence there

It is quite an old phrase now I guess. I've heard it in the animated film 'Anastasia' and in other shows. I think it's pretty much the same as 'have it down to perfection/second nature' kind of a thing!

Yeah, actually to be honest back when I was first really starting to develop stuff for Valanbe as an OC (back in the late 2000s, like from 2008 to 2010-ish) I was also quite into Smash Bros Brawl, and I first saw Palutena (hope I spelled her name properly) as Pit's final smash, I liked her design quite a bit and decided to use her as a somewhat minor, yet substantial influence on Vala's design. But yeah, they've both definitely got the whole "angelic goddess of light" thing going on, now don't they?
Actually believe it or not if you go way, WAY back to the mid 2000s Vala was originally inspired by an anime character my best friend Coby had a crush on, namely Allenby from Mobile Fighter G Gundam (here are some pictures: [link] , [link] and [link] .) Hence the fact that the name "Valanbe" vaguely rhymes with the name "Allenby." basically this was because I think Coby had a dream back in 2002-2003 or so where Allenby appeared and said she was some kind of goddess or something, which inspired both of us to create a character based on Allenby who actually WAS a goddess! Vala's old design looked a lot more like Allenby, back when I drew her in an anime/manga-influenced style, also back when her hair was straight. Back then she pretty much just looked like Allenby with gold hair and purple eyes, six wings, and a pretty gown.
However since mid-late 2011 I majorly redesigned her to be more original, also using my new, more-realistic drawing style on her that was more inspired by American comics and video game concept art. I made her gown fancier, sexier and added lots of armor plating (because practically ALL my major OCs wear armor in some form or another, I'm pretty much obsessed with armor,) changed her hairstyle to feature curled ringlets in the back, and also drew some influence from MLP for this redesign. Namely, it's very hard to see, but the curled part of her hair was inspired by Rarity's mane, while the gold parts of her armor were somewhat inspired by Princess Celestia's gold armor. I can probably cite at least ten fictional characters who contributed design elements to Vala's final design, although she was mostly inspired by real-world goddesses from various ancient, polytheistic mythologies.

lol...yeah she's quite well-endowed in that department, isn't she? And I just had to put in the meme reference. Yup, I decided to give her well-defined hips and a revealing outfit as well. I hardly ever draw women, but when I do I try to make them quite attractive. See? I still have it in me to draw humanoid characters, not just ponies. I had a great time designing her costume, especially the armor and the shiny gold parts. I think you'll find that practically EVERY character I've designed, if they're important, will have armor. Because you know, no armor is bo-ring!

oh, you mean the "DAT ASS" I put there? Yup, I can't help it, I'm obsessed with internet memes for better or for worse. I would have put "DAT PLOT" but that wouldn't really make any sense since she's a Vek'hu, not a pony, and would only confuse the bronies who watch me. So yeah, this is Vala's current redesign, and I gotta say, I'm pretty damn happy with it. Except her wings still need some good old fashioned redesignin' too. These aren't the wings she'll have in the final design, her final wings will be more ornate and have an armored appearance. Thanks for the comment
