Description
Here's a very quick and dirty sketch I did of a dropship for mecha troops. It is launched from an orbiting starship, comes down through the atmosphere, then ditches the heat shields which cover the tires (which also serve as the landing & VTOL rockets), ignites the retro rockets to land, rotating the retro rockets to become the six tires. It can then roll around the surface, and open its hatches to deploy mecha and infantry.Although it's like Aliens' dropship and APC combined, I was originally inspired by the MTA Titan from the aborted (thankfully!) Robotech II. I know Battletech is also big on dropships, but I designed this for a Mekton campaign I ran. Go figure.
(By the way, I know what a droptank really is... the name is a play on the term, o'course.)

Much likeΒ sailingauora , I was immediately reminded of the good ol' Mobile Suit Gundam anime. The original, that is; the one focusing upon the One Year War between theΒ the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation. There's so much life in this simple little scene, it's fantastic! Great job on this!Β

Gosh, well thank you! I appreciate the compliments, and if it reminds you of Gundam I sure can't complain.

Oh? Which one(s)? I'm trying to think about which anime it could remind you of. I have a couple of guesses...

Great idea, never really thought of mechs needing transport like that, but it works awesomely.

Oh, it's a Mek from the old campaign. I think I called it a Ranger. (Not a very cool name, I know.) Maybe I'll redraw it and post it sometime.

Actually, this better way better than the MTA Titan from......Robotech II. Eechh...C'mon, really?! Robotech II?! Goddammit, Carl Macek. You suck. Damn anime-raper. Anyway, this design has the "hard" sci-fi appearance to it, which is always a good thing. Just out of curiosity, what sort of mobile suit is that you have depicted in the access hatch?

Oh it's just some Mekton I used in some games of mine. This was indeed inspired by the MTA Titan, which I actually think was a partially decent design. Or rather, a decent concept.

Did I ever tell you about the "Gungnir Troop Insertion Unit" for my old Shattered Suns campaign?
Dropped like an enormous armored lawn dart from space (TFX: Ship), it rockets down to the surface, whereupon it buries itself up to a third of its length into the terrain. It then deploys into "Fortress Mode" (TFX: Building) and throws a bunch of remotes (also with TFX: Building) on them to the six hexes surrounding it. These are manned with troops, mecha, and supplies.
When the beachhead is established by way of all these enormous prickly spines from space, they then transform again (TFX: Tank) and engage burrowing mode, digging their way through the planet to pop up behind enemy lines and disgorge their second wave of troops and mecha.
The Gungnir. So named because like Odin's fabled spear, they get thrown into the ground to stir up trouble in the world of men.

I blame you and Mark and David, really. It was your fault for sending me that "Okay, smartass" e-mail and encouraging me to let my brain go bonkers.
So, really, it's all your doing.
YOU DID THIS TO ME!

Thank you, I'm glad you like it sir.
I'm not sure how many units it can hold. I'd guess something like five or six. Plus infantry and/or roadstrikers.

Would be interesting to see the tank in a combat situation. Perhaps ignite any remaining fuel through those thrusters in the wheels against enemy infantry. Pretty neat in all honesty, good design.
