I was gonna draw the designs for Hot Rod the same way I did for Bluestreak...but then I thought: do you know who would make a much better job? Sunstreaker!
In the image:
Sunny doesn't have his drawing pad anymore, but he's inprovising with some slabs of metal he found in the storage room because recently he has started having the urge to draw again.
So here he is, designing some new modifications for Hot Rod's armour while he watches over the subject of his studies using the surveillance monitors; and look, seems like the kid is trying to smuggle another organic...
Yeah, I need to make a excuse for Sunny having so many things scattered in the desk, so no digital materials for Sunny!

Yeah, Sunstreaker are learned in leaps and bounds! Hot Rod is learning sneaking tacktics, Sunny is graduated "parenting 101" and is now coursing "advanced elements of parenting"

He just...loves him so much omg. He will watch him smuggle that organic, and later deal with it but for now he rather just have his moment of peace and draw his little Roddy, haha!

hehe... I dunno, I think Suny would let Hot Rod think he has the victory for now and then let him down when they leave that planet...someone gotta teach that kid about the conservation of the ecosystems after all!

You know, I actually did use metal sheets once, during the war on Cybertron. Except I used one of Ratchet's scalpels. But this is still very good. Hot Rod looks like he's gonna be in a lot of trouble. I distinctly remember a certain yellow and black youngling always trying to keep organic pets on the Ark...

Of course, haha. I think Optimus once gave in and let him keep a giant cat-like beast. The thing was a terror. Ended up being left on an organic planet, it was too big.

Oh!! thet would have been awesome! I recently saw around DA an image where Hot ROd is doodling using a laser and it looked so great!
I thought about changing it for a while after seeing that image...but this is my original idea and I must stick to that...

Look at Hot Rod being both the perpetrator and lookout. 
Oh my GOODNESS, those sketches! I'm starting to think that YOU are Sunstreaker, and have been all this time. *peers suspiciously* I see yooooou...
Sunny must have learned to program at least one camera to be tracking Hot Rod at all times. Unfortunately having it alert him each time the youngling does anything suspicious would mean a blaring alarm 24/7, so he's got to keep an optic on him himself.
I'm trying to picture Hot Rod's reaction if he ever got a hold of one of those sketches. Probably somewhere between "Why are you drawing me?!" and "I look EPIC!! 8D"
