When you upload the edit do it from selecting "edit deviation" on this page and then do the upload process there and it will just swap the images and will not mess with anything associated with it.
The idea of the smoke would be a good idea and maybe add something to the background as you have all that space that does seem like it is a tad too empty. (Maybe a blood spatter?)
