My main thing about drawing is just to continue drawing things that interest me and try to keep excited and focused about it when I do have time to draw. Good luck! I think you have a good start.

You bet! And I would love to see yours. I wish I could draw portraits and human emotions. And I think it will be easier for me when I have such good examples before my eyes.

It does get easier with practice.

Here are my steps.
1. REFERENCE: Find a reference in my own photos or find one online. I pick my subjects based on what is in the news, who died, who was born or whatever pops into my mind.
2. OUTLINE: I have a lot of methods for outlining. Grids, print out a photo and put graphite on the back and trace it, or use a light table to get my light outlines.
3. VALUES: I lightly move from area to area in the drawing and build up shadow values.
4. EMPHASIS: the next thing is to go back over the darkest areas of the face and make bold areas of the eyes, nose, mouth, ridges in the face that give it character. Those are the key points that create the likeness.
5. BLEND: Depending on what I want, I may or may not blend. Not blending some drawings gives a different texture that help give a gritty look that might not look good on a woman, but gives a man weathered character.
6. HIGHLIGHT: I may not save highlighting for last always, but this step helps to make some areas pop and look more 3D.
7. VALUES FINAL: Rule of thumb is that blacks should be black and whites should be white. Grayscale range should hit everything from 0% to nearly 100%.

That's great. And how much time do you usually spend for a sketch like this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gregchapin In reply to Ellaerie [2011-09-07 19:22:55 +0000 UTC]

That one was less than an hour. The more detailed drawings are more like 3-4 hours
