Description
This one is a Tut for quick shading glass.1: the first highlight directly reflects the source light.
2: in the shadow's middle you got also light because theres som light which went through the glass sphere.
3: the backhighlight comes into existance when the light leaves the sphere on the backside.
the marginal area is also lighter than the middle because of the angle of total reflection (~3deg). that also explains, why the border of the shadow appears to be darker.
--- Update! ---
Hey people!
As I noticed that this (very old) tutorial is still quite popular among you folks I started a blog that is going to be full of more tutorials.

Lovely, do you have also something similar for flat black glass reflections? I am experimenting with it, but since the reflections are the most difficult part (and almost not to be seen), it's hard to achieve.

Thanks a lot for the feedback!
At the moment I haven't got anything like that and I don't know, if I got the time in the next few days to do another tutorial. But if I could see, what you are working on, I could maybe give you some advice (if I can^^). What do you mean "flat"? You mean for example for a button? or a flat surface like a plane in a vehicle's design? A simple way to research this is, to build it in a 3d-programm and render it.

Hey there!
Well, I am playing OpenTTD (which is an open source edition of the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe game's engine), and I was wondering if it would be possible creating a theme based on Tron 2.0. Now if you have seen the movie, it looks like everything would be on some black glass, everything looks fragile yet stable.
Now I wanted to use the same effect as for the base tile; I wanted to make a square looking like black glass and then use that. Now I wanted to mimic some of these images , yet it didn't work out that well.
So this is why I was looking for some advice, which would be the best approach. How much reflections? How shady? How deep black?
I would thank you for your advices in advance, if you have any, it's not a big issue, I was just looking for new ideas basically.
