Description
LNER A3 Pacific No. 2744 was built at Doncaster Works on August 28, 1928. It was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and named "Grand Parade" after an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse. This locomotive is known to have been involved in the tragic train crash that occurred at Castlecary on December 10th, 1937, killing 35 people. The locomotive was damaged beyond repair and was scrapped. A new A3 has been built with the same name and number as the original one. The 2nd was renumbered into 90 by Edward Thompson in 1945/46 and finally 60090 when the British Railways was formed in 1948. Grand Palace was allocated to 35A New England shed and was later 65B St. Rollox shed. The locomotive was finally withdrawn on October 28th, 1963, and was scrapped at Cowlairs Works on January 24th, 1964.
