Well, your experiment was a success. This came out great.
Was this film, or digital? Which ever, you should be happy with the results.

It was taken with my old digital camera. I was trying out different settings to try and capture the image as best I could.
I laid down on the dock since I didn't have a tripod at the time in order to keep the camera as still as possible while the image was being captured. I was lucky that I managed to find the right settings before it got too dark lol.

I like that Idea, I have even set my camera down, focused, then hit self-timer for the exposure to keep it out of my unsteady hands.

I agree. I really wanted to capture that twilight pic but at first I couldn't get the camera steady enough or the setting just right.
I played with the settings for around 20 mins before I got it just right. Good thing to, about 5 mins later the pic wouldn't have had turned out as nice since the sun had fully set.
