Description This GIMP-only brush set produces an effect similar to the "Rake tool" of PainterX. I couldn't find this feature anywhere so felt I should create this anim-brush to simulate the tool in GIMP.

The Rake is a very versatile animated art brush, usable for creating everything from grass and hair to patterns, cross-hatches and technical sketches.

The package contains three Rake brushes, with a rake of 3, 5 and 11 teeth respectively. You are recommended to use at least GIMP 2.4 for full brush scaling features. The brush also works fine with a tablet and pressure sensitivity. To install, just Download the set, unzip it and put the *.gih files in a place where GIMP looks for brushes.

They are free to use, but if you download and use them a fav here on DA is appreciated.

I have a question about these brushes. You said, "use at least GIMP 2.4 for full brush scaling features." But would they work for an older Gimp too? (but without the scaling of course.)

Your brushes look cool!

They work just fine for older versions, but they will only come out the same size all the time.
There is however no reason whatsoever to use an older GIMP version than 2.4 these days ...

There is if you're running an older version of Linux and you can't update all the necessary libraries.

By the way, do you have the script fu's and the python fu's? I have another Linux (Puppy 4.1.2) and it has Gimp 2.4 but it did not come with the 'fu's. I don't remember where the best place is to obtain them.

The question then becomes why one would stick to an old version of Linux ...

Anyway, the fus are included in the default gimp install. I guess you can download the source from gimp.org and just move the files out if it. Otherwise photocomix [link] has backups of all defaults ... but that's for 2.6, I don't know where you can find the files for the outdated versions of GIMP.

Because this one works well and I had invested 2 years getting to know how to configure it. I'm also concerned about my hardware. If Novell suddenly decides not to support something that I have, and if I decided to go back to the former version, I would no longer be able to reinstall all my software since they don't keep older software packages on the servers. The dependencies can be a pain. Which makes me wonder about people I've seen asking in the forums about installing older Linuxes on their older computers, if they are ever able to find any software packages for them.

Anyway, one of these days, I'll find that missing spare hard drive and put that in this computer and put a newer Linux version on that and make it a dual boot. Meanwhile, I've been playing with Puppy, as I've said before, and that is newer. The Gimp package for it didn't seem to come with the script/python fu's and that is why I asked about that.

It's your call, but it doesn't make sense to hold on to the old system if you no longer can run relatively recent versions of programs -- that is not the sign of a well-working system (not to mention that you are making yourself vulnerable to security exploits since you don't get the latest patches and bug fixes). As for your hardware, I've not heard of any hardware support being dropped, ever. Each linux kernel supports more things, not less. Worst case scenario is that you might have to activate the module yourself if it is not on by default, very seldomly do you even have to recompile the kernel these days...

Yes, I know that eventually I will have to move on to a newer version and what you said about hardware support makes me feel a bit better. Maybe you can help this person out: [link]

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks. These do work for hair, but often you need something even more flowing and irregular for hair strands. I can recommend the "furr" gimp brushes you can find here, those are what I use for hair (a single hard brush is also fine, depends on the effect you want):

Good job

Painter X is still better though, it has some things for the barrel rotation on the 6D brush from wacom... I need to get a wacom so I can try that...

Griatch-art In reply to 777Sir [2008-02-17 09:14:38 +0000 UTC]

Barell rotation is a nice feature, yes. In this case, letting the brush movement-direction determine the angle is more generally useful also for people without tablets though.

Awesome, I can see where I might use this if I have the courage to start drawing / colouring ^_^

Also, I don't suppose you have a nice pencil / graphite brush for gimp? Or some specific settings for the pencil tool? I can't get it to seem like a pencil...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Griatch-art In reply to mrfaemir [2008-02-16 19:54:41 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, hope you find use for them.

One of the best pencil representation I have found using the Crayon_Thick brush from this brush set here on DA: [link]
Using the scaling feature of GIMP2.4 you can make these brushes really fine and even though they don't look it in full size, the scaled-down version does look pretty much like a pencil stroke.
