Description Was a bit hesitant about posting this one, but what the heck.

This is a self-portrait of me, Griatch, surrounded by a mix of my imaginary characters, both from my writing projects as well as roleplaying over the years. It's actually the first self-portrait I've ever done.

I originally made this image as a Christmas present to my folks and was pretty pleased with it even though my folks keep telling me the likeness is only so-so. Ah well.
From the center to the left, going clockwise: Me, the "Unknown girl", Ebb the Dragon (only seen partly), The Jester and Blackback the troll Merchant.

All Characters (including myself) are my own and Β©Griatch

Putting this up here so I can get some critique on it. All done from scratch in the program GIMP. I used a mirror and some photos as reference for drawing me.

no problem. Work like that deserves it. It really seems like a "true self" entry, with your inclusion of personal elements and your excellent self portrait.

Beautiful! I was wondering how you got the hair on the beast so perfect? When I draw hair it looks like it's done with a sharpie... do you blow the picture up really huge and paint the hair? I had the same problem with your troll girl tutorial... the hair was too coarse even with a 1 pixel brush.

That is probably the most perfect fur I have ever seen lol. I request a hair/fur tutorial lol

When it comes to fur and hair, it helps to use a splatter-brush (a brush created out of several small dots, it's easy to do on your own, or you can search deviantart for "gimp-brushes" to find a set of brushes called "furr" which are nice). As for the detail achieved, if you tried my tutorials you will find you 1) have to use a high resolution (300dpi) and 2) need to use low opacity. These two in combination allows you to put many small strands down. You always have to do work woth the small resizeable hard-round brush too, to avoid repetition in the hair.

In the case of the troll girl, the hair is really not that fine, the strands are intentionally rather coardse and thick. It all comes down to over-painting layer upon layer of structure so that you get the impression there is a mass of strands beneath. That particular hair, big though it may be, is actually not so complicated as it looks.

Several have asked me for a hair/fur tutorial over the years, I should maybe try to find time to do it one of those days ... ^_^;

Yay thank you! I printed your tutorial on the forest scene and downloaded the brushes you suggested for fur.. I only chose one but I may make my own so I can resize it as needed. It is simply dots just like you said. I can do dots ^^ I think the dpi may be my whole problem.. I tend to work very small.. kinda like what you see is what you get. I never work in high resolution because I like to see the whole picture. I know I can view at a lower percentage so I can see it all but I never have. I will definitely have to play with the resolution in my upcoming project.

I make things for my friends by request and one has requested a piece. I'm a good manipulator even if I can't draw lol and they seem to like it. At the risk of showing my noobishness: I have trouble uploading things to websites.. prior to my Gimp introduction last year, I had never used photobucket or anything... total newbie here. /blush I was emailing my pictures to people in order to share them. Gimme a few years and I'll be more savvy lol!

thank you for your tips!

Wow, this has a lot less comments then your other ones. Is the girl in green missing a leg? On another note, I'm kinda wondering what you would do if you could make white flames with your hands

Thanks for the comment Linkmasta!

All these characters was depicted by me at some point in the gallery, and yes she is missing a leg, the Unknown girl is one of my more interesting characters I think. It would sure be cool if one could light flames in the hand! If nothing else for the pure brag factor.

wow, GIMP? i was quite sure that was a painting! its nice how you've done the lighting, and cast the shadows respectively, it really makes this painting look pretty realistc from afar! (DAMMIT I SAID PAINTING. SEE WHAT YOUVE DONE. O.O)

Lol, thanks. It was meant to feel like a painting of sorts, glad it shows. GIMP is a very powerful program once you get to know it; does all I need it to do. Thanks for the comment!

If you mean the guy with the flame in the hand, I guess I should be flattered, since this is a self portrait. I'm sad to say I cannot really light white fire in my hand in real life though. Thanks for the comment.!

GIMP (if that's what you mean by "tools") is not a hindrance at all. It's an extremely powerful program.

Yes thats the problem with alot of GIMP users. They dont fully understand the programm thus they complain. GIMP is a powerful tool indeed especially the new release (the one on which you wrote a review).
