i remember my 4th grade spelling bee... I was in the top 3, and then I got out on "gregarious"... And because I'm an introvert, I don't get along with overly gregarious people(with a few exceptions), so I'm kind of having the same irony as you.. wow.

Ughhh, spelling bees! My town has one spelling bee, and it's just for fifth graders. (well, there's an adult spelling bee, too, but that's another story) So basically, even if you're a great speller, if you get the tiniest bit nervous and accidentally misspell a word (I was going too fast and spelled "disaster" "disater" -__-) one time, you've lost your only chance. EVER. And we didn't even have spelling bees in school or anything, not even for practice, it's just the town-wide spelling bee and that's it. And at the town spelling bee, the adults get to a) form teams of three; b) write down their answers on mini whiteboards; c) have three chances before being eliminated; and d) have rounds with breaks in between. The fifth graders are completely on their own, have to speak in front of a huge auditorium of people; are eliminated at the very first misspelling; and get no breaks, they don't even get to leave the stage. I really don't understand it.

It's worse for me because I should be trying to get better at Art and the things I wanna do (since I am inexperienced) and these procrastination is getting in my way.
Though sometimes, I set a timer and I don't allow myself to get distracted until the timer is up, then I can set the timer again to determine a break and return to what I am doing when the timer is up. Rinse and repeat.

And fourth grade spelling bee? Have a bad memory about that. Eliminated first round, and I blame the person saying the word. Asked for "burrow" and I spelled it correctly. Eliminated for misspelling "burro", as in the Spanish word for donkey. I'm probably going to get flak for this, but that's why you don't let white people say Spanish words at events like that!
